It's probably just the new icons etc, but I agree, it does seem somewhat cleaner.

The wait for the Android 2.1 update on the Orange HTC Hero is taking the piss. Weeks later and still no sign of an official update. Grrrr!

I know I could ninja the 2.1 update but really CBA to mess out. In future I'll be going sim free only.

It'll be somewhat longer judging by the voicemail I got from an Orange rep after waiting newly 2 weeks for a reply from a support ticket. She said that it didn't meet there standards and as of yet there was no sign of when it would be ready.

This was a couple weeks ago now, but it didn't sound hopeful.

If it helps any, I can't seem to find anything that might be missing as a result of running the generic ROM as apposed to an Orange one. The only problem I had was that I had to unlock the phone.

Baz just do it, the performance of the latest villain and its features of gobsmacking, as for orange standards....they have standards?

Just rooted and loaded 2.1 onto my old G1 / htc dream.

Is a little sluggish sometimes, force closes on people search (happens with all roms) but otherwise the features are immense. Wifi tethering? yes!

Hey guys. I got a quick question for all of you HTC owners. Can you use any mp3 you want as a ringtone or do you have to purchase them through your provider ?

I have had 4 cell phones over the last 10 years and I still can't customize my ringtone. It pisses me off big time. I was especially pissed when I learned I couldn't do it with my LG Rumor... what a POS phone

Yup, you can use MP3's as ringtones. I use Ringdroid to tweak the MP3 into a nice loop for the tone.

hi all especially Orange HTC Hero users.
Please register if not already done so to FB group "Orange UK - Give HTC Hero owners the 2.1 Update - NOW."
    http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=140327502658782&v=info

    My story:
I went the GoldCard route, went through the process of down grading to Orange build 2.73.61.5 , then upgrade to WWE 2.73.405.5, got prompt for updates OTA, went through the updates (was nice to watch, got my hopes up), completed all updates, but SIM is Network locked and phone required "sim network unlock PIN", removed sim, verified it is indeed 2.1 update1 running and played around a bit and must agree, the 2.1 update is well good, but I can't use my Orange Sim hence my contracted service so I have now, downgrade back to the crappy Orange 1.5 build 2.73.61.5 and back online.

So it is doable just need the "sim network unlock PIN" and don't think using another sim will work as I tried the O2 sim and no good same thing "sim network unlock PIN" required. This makes me think it's not necessarily the sim but may be the phone.

Do you think a Vanillian ROM may work, all I need to do is load the ROM on my 2Gb card or would I get the same issue with sim network unlock pin required?

I joined the facebook group, but tbh I am thinking of leaving it already, I've had 5 messages from it in the last couple days and it is getting a tad annoying as it seems to be nothing that couldn't just be put on the wall of the group or something.

Also, the phone needs to be unlocked before you can use 2.1, not sure about other ROMs, but probably the same thing. It's not overly expensive, about £10-15. Just don't waste your time with asking Orange to do it, as it takes them 20 days and costs £20 AND you have to have owned the phone for 3 months, I did it with a website and got it within 20 minutes.

You don't need to unlock the phone before using the VillainROM. I read somewhere that as long as you don't update the radio, then you will be fine. That much has held true for me. I have been on 2.1 on Orange without unlocking it for a couple of weeks now and had absolutley no problems.

Your problem is the radio. I think the .15.11 radio (and .15.01?) radio don't work on Orange, but the .15.14 radio does.

Damn, I'm glad I'm not in the UK and on Orange right now :p Got my update early this month (yay!) and I thought that was late.. Be aware that you might have to delete some apps to make room in memory for the install! You should try sorting your apps after how much you like them to shorten the wait  (Don't worry, you can reinstall them when the upgrade is done, it just needs room to unpack files)

On a sidenote I'm really starting to appreciate how fast HSDPA is! Downloaded the over 80MB update on it (I've got a good data plan!) and thought it went suspiciously fast, so I downloaded Speed Test from Market, and it turns out I'm getting ~2,5 Mb/s pretty much everywhere! That's almost half of what I have at home on my cable!

Well I finally got fed up with the battery life In the hero when I started using it as an ereader and MP3 player, It was keeping the screen lit that was killing the battery. so bought an extended one doubles the battery life and adds an extra 5mm to the back of the phone. I've not really noticed the size increase as I used to have quite a thick (one the back) silicon case thing on it before and its not really any thicker now. battery is now giving me two days of heavy browsing/ reading/ MP3 and bluetoothing.

I just got my Legend today, and as much as I like it I'm very unimpressed with its battery life (down to half already, although I have been using it pretty much constantly for the last 3 hours). It's a shame I can't buy an extended battery either as it wouldn't fit in the casing :(

there is an 1800mAh battery upgrade for the legend, which is considerably more ooomph than the stock 1300mAh battery. I'm seriously considering one for mine as I tend to hammer about 80% of the battery life using it as an mp3 player at work.
