As titled I am due a new phone and I'm debating the HTC One or wait for the LG G2/ Nexus 5 just wondering what its like carrying these phone around all day?
depends what you're used to, size of your hand, etc i personally find the bigger phones awkward to use
I don't personally have a 5" phone but I do see people using them but unless you have largish hands you will probably struggle to use it one handed. If this is how you currently use a phone, I imagine it would it would take a change of habit. Having said that, I don't know anyone who has gone to a smaller phone after getting a large phone so it can't be that bad.
I have an S3 is which has a 4.8" screen. I like it. I have quite large hands so it doesn't feel too big for me. However they can feel slightly encumbersome in your pocket. It pulls down my loose pair of jeans if I don't wear a belt
It isn't a problem in your pocket. The only time you notice a disadvantage is when you use it one handed and need to reach the top parts of the screen. Or just holding it one handed in general, if it's really thin and big screened it doesn't feel too comfortable, your hand may cramp. These are really minor issues though to be perfectly honest, easily ignored imo.
Anything over 4.5 is getting too big imo. That's got something to do with comfort and even more to do with a large phone taking up too much of my pocket.
Reading this from the front page all I see is, "Anyone with 5 inch plus . . ." which makes the rest of this thread really funny.
I have a S3. Again 4.8" ~ 5" It was quite large at first compared to my HTC desire. Now it feels normal and using my GFs iphone 4s or dads HTC Desire feels tiny in comparison! More screen size is always a bonus
Have a Galaxy note (not the note 2 where they gimped the screen however, note 3 may be an upgrade with its 1080 screen, but thats a massive sidetrack) the note is so thin its no issue, fit it into jean pockets with no issue, and its not obtrusive (only issue is getting it out* if sat down). I'm able to use it one handed, though I prefer to have it horizontal so thats 2 hands. personally cant see myself going to anything smaller, as it makes web browsing so much easier * expanding on d_stilgar's comment, that phrase isn't making this thread any better
I've had the Galaxy Nexus (4.65") since release and I love it, I'm 6'2 so have fairly large hands but I would suggest you have a military level rubber case on that bad boy as I shift the phone around my hand when using one handed like crazy, easy to drop if your not crazy dextrous.
As others have said, it depends on what you're used to, how big your hands are, and of course what you use it for. The bigger screen is good for web browsing, and viewing media, however if they aren't your primary uses of your phone they may not be worth the downsides (being slightly more difficult to use, probably not fitting in all pockets etc) Personally I've no desire to go to a phone with a screen of that kind of size, mainly because I don't do that much browsing on my phone, and don't really want to.
For me the thickness is more important than the length Seriously though - I have a Galaxy S4 and find it more comfortable to carry round in my pocket than many phones due to the fact that, whilst it has a large screen, it's very thin (even with a s view cover on)
Got the Galaxy Note 2 and I love it. Fits in my pocket fine and have no issue using it (and I don't have giant hands). To be fair I use it more for internet browsing, emails and texts than I do for phoning people. Does look a little silly when used as a phone but the benefits elsewhere outweigh this.
Related question: How do you sit down with a 5 incher phone in your pocket? (don't get any strange ideas) Seriously, it is a phone, not a computer device! I find older 3.5inch iPhones to be perfect size, even 5's 4 inch to be too big. My Dad's Nexus 4 is just ridiculous. This trend of ever larger phones is just ludicrous. It is no longer a mobile device, turning into a portable computer. If I want a portable computer, I'd put the iPad into my man/camera bag.
But you can't fit an iPad convientantly in your pocket can you? I'm a bit behind on the smartphone scene (never had a top of the range one) but I recently went from a 3" Huawei Blaze (£40 new about 2-3 years ago) to a 4.5" smartphone. My first impression was that it seemed way too big and I wasn't sure if I'd regret my decision. A week down the line and I loved it. Not sure if I'd ever get a bigger one as this seems to strike a balance of being big enough to be very usable (watched films, read books and just generally a joy to use) without being a nuisance in my pocket but I am now sold that there is definitely merit in having a larger screen on one. As George has pointed out; if it isn't too thick, it isn't a problem. If it was really bulky I would reconsider. HTC one is about the best looking phone on the market anyway IMO.
Out of all the phones I've used so far I find the Nexus 4 (4.7") to be the perfect size and most comfortable in the hand, that said my hands are the size of dinner plates so I can probably live with it being a bit bigger and will be upgrading to the Nexus 5 when it's released since it won't be that much larger.
That's the thing, why would you want to watch films and read books on a mobile device designed for mobile communications? I'd settle with a few games to kill the time, use it to read 140 character posts. But other entertainment that involves enjoying the visual or having to read for a long time doesn't belong to the phone, for me at least. a 5 inch phone feels like jack of all trades, master of none.
Convenience. I would be carrying a phone anyway, so an extra inch of screen (split between length and width) is hardly a burden in portablity for actually being able to do these tasks comfortably as well as it being a communications device.
