I'm thinking about upgrading my 5770 to a GTX460 1Gb and ebaying the 5770 to make up some of the difference. I'm just wondering if I should maybe hold off a few months to see what happens. I read an article out there saying that the 6-series ATi cards should be out in 2010, but that it would only be the "novelty" cards. I'm thinking the super expensive top-end models, with the more consumer grade ones coming out in 2011. Any thoughts?
Actually it's supposed to be the £150-200 card out first. I would definitely wait til mid-late October to see what appears.
hardly a massive upgrade from a 5770 to a 460. yeah its faster but not upgrade faster unless your playing at 1920x1080+
According to bit's review the 1gb 460 will get me anywhere from 10-15fps faster average in the games tested, and more importantly, much much better minimum frames. Anyway, any rumors/leaks on the 6 series in terms of performance, price, etc?
There have been numerous leaks out so far, some even suggesting that the 6xxx series is actually a new architecture rather than a refined version of the current. This however, is very doubtful but AMD have had a long time now to refine the current architecture and if they release a good driver with the new cards straight away then the "novelty" tag could be shaken pretty quickly. http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/09/10/one-more-amd-graphics-card-leaks/ I would say (though I'm no expert) that you should wait for their release as they will probably show a decent enough performance gain over the 5xxx series to justify the wait.
wonder if the 6xxx will be any better at folding? Or is that a driver issue/client issue on the developers parts?
IIRC whether AMD or nVidia cards fold better is based on how the newest version of F@H is coded, the GTX 480 folds far better than the 5970, but the 5970 is better for gaming, etc.
