Does anoyone know if there is anything extra you have to do to use AOL with wireless?

My friend has just got herself a new laptop, and I am looking into anything she needs for it.

Also can anyone recommend a good router for normal sized 3 bedroom house.

I heard about that Wimax netgear one that claims to be like 1000% better than normal routers or something. Can anyone verify this?

If not any good wireless routers that work with AOL.

    Cheers people!

AOL is an ISP right? ISP's offer you a modem, and why shouldn't any router work together with that? But I do recall you need a special (=non default) setting on something, but I recon that would be on your modem.

I heard very good things about Linksys, and I personally had good expiriences with D-link. In contrary to Belkin. But like another thread pointed out, in the end you need 5%good gear, 5% good luck with the gear, and 90% of knowledge to get everything working. Because if a company sells junk, it won't last long ;)

I've configured a couple networks for AOL. Linksys are generally the best brand to use for this, as they offer special support in their firmware for things required for it.

Can you provide information about what kind of setup you're looking for? information about what kind of AOL connection you're looking at would be better.

The ones I've dealt with are cable connections that are a collaboration between AOL and another ISP (the one they worked with here was Road Runner from Time Warner cable). If you don't need AOL for some stupid reason, get the connection straight from the affiliating ISP. getting AOL is a waste of money, and it complicates the configuration of your network far too much. I'm subscribed to this thread and will check back once you've posted a bit more information

AOL Gold Package, and it is just a Laptop needing the wireless.

There is a main computer that connects to AOL at the moment via a ASDL USB modem.

I'm assuming your ADSL modem has an ethernet/RJ45 port on it. Assuming that, just go get a linksys wireless router(I'd suggest netgear but I've never used them with AOL's system) and plug it in. It shouldn't be complicated to configure it, if anything is needed at all. The AOL client simply has a setting for always-on connections requiring authentication with AOL's "High Speed" service.

The modem probably doesn't have ethernet, most ISPs in the UK only give you a crappy USB modem, so you'll need a wifi router with adsl modem built in :)

Yep, we have a USB modem, and no ASDL line on the back of the Linksys router she just bought without listening to me.

I like Linksys as a company, can anyone link me to a Linksys router with an ASDL modem built in?

If you want something that definately works (have it working right now here), then the Netgear DG834GT works.
I don't know about others, but they should work, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't.
