According to the beeb, Mobile PC magazine has voted one of the original Apple PowerBooks as the all time greatest gadget:

The Apple Powerbook 100 has been chosen as the greatest gadget of all time, by US magazine Mobile PC.

The 1991 laptop was chosen because it was one of the first "lightweight" portable computers and helped define the layout of all future notebook PCs.

The magazine has compiled an all-time top 100 list of gadgets, which includes the Sony Walkman at number three and the 1956 Zenith remote control at two.

Gadgets needed moving parts and/or electronics to warrant inclusion.

The magazine specified that gadgets also needed to be a "self-contained apparatus that can be used on its own, not a subset of another device".

I guess there'll be a lot of disagreement over this accolade, but think about why it was chosen - not because it's an Apple, or that it's a non Wintel based machine - but because before this, "laptops" used to look like this and this...

    Thanks, Apple. Thapple. ;)

I still think the walkman should have won - it has paved the way for countless generations of portable music. Also the mp3 RIO WASNT the first mp3 player, so that shouldnt have been in there either.

I think the Walkman should have been on top.

While the Rio wasnt technically the first player, it is commonly regarded as the first one - definitely was the first one that everyone knew about .... So it could be considered a winner based on fame rather than being there first.

Oooo! Yes, I'd forgoton about the Compaq sewing machines... I borrowed one of those one summer whilst I was at college to type up one of my assignments. I'm sure the case was made out of an exotic alloy of plastic and Lead, considering how much the bloody thing weighed! :hehe:

You guys are all nuts, where would you be without the remote control. That is by far the single greatest gadget of all time. Us Americans would all be skinny without the remote control. Constantly getting off the couch to change the channel. Apple laptop, my a$$.

I'm pretty sure the remote control in question which came in the top10 was a battery-free model which used ultra-sonic waves to communicate with the tv, and therefore wasn't extremely versatile, just very clever
