Lo chaps So a Nice Work college of mine gave me her fully kitted out MBP to have a go with an install a few bits like Openoffice and stuffs. Anyways I have virtually NO experiance with any MAC's of any kind other than iTunes and my iPod, so i have a few questions that need to be answered. 1)Is there and sort of Chkdsk or Defrag type of software built into OSX and what is it called and where can i find it? 2)I need to find a DIVX/XVID/HD264 filters, so can anyone recomend me a codec pack that will do the job for the MBP? 3)How hard is it to network the MBP to my PC and to share the net connection, I dont have my wireless setup at the moment so the only way is thru networking cable. 4)Im trying to install some software onto the MBP and it asks me for a password, but i have asked my friend and she comes up blank, do the MAC's have a default password for software installations? If not is there some software where i could reset it or bypass it? 5)How would i go about uninstalling software installed on the MBP? there have been some botched attempts at certain softwares which are messing up the system and i would like to remove as they are unnessary, so how would i go about this. If anyone can help i'd be most greatfull, as not for my friend but even me as i would gain info on the workings of a OSX based machine. Thanks guys!
1 - check in Disk Utility (in applications\utilities) 2 - I think quicktime has a couple built in. I had to google a bit to get my Xvids with AC3 audio working properly with it, unfortunately I don't have a clue where I found the plugins. Maybe give VLC a go, it should handle that stuff out of the box. 3 - Networking is easy enough... ICS is another matter. I'm sure it's possible... I know doing it on the windows box tends to be a pain in the arse, but I think OS X makes it fairly simple. Somewhere in the network section under system preferences would be where to look (the lightswitch in the dock) 4 - your friend would have set a password when she first set the thing up. By default, it won't ask for it when you log in since it gets stored in the keychain. AFAIK, the only way to bypass it would be to reinstall OS X (which is a cinch, especially since there's an archive documents option upon doing so). 5 - for most things, just drag the icon that's in the applications folder to the trash. A few provide uninstaller scripts, but it's fairly uncommon. The program within apps is, from what I can tell, effectively a folder containing all the app contents, that just runs the right file when you launch it. Just a warning - I've had absolutely no luck at all with OpenOffice on my MBP. Though checking their website, it looks like they've released a proper Intel version. I'm going to give it a try to see how it goes (wonderful college connection going a tenth the speed I got at home... typical)
So a Nice Work college of mine gave me her fully kitted out MBP to have a go with an install a few bits like Openoffice and stuffs. Just download the OOO installer. 1)Is there and sort of Chkdsk or Defrag type of software built into OSX and what is it called and where can i find it? Diskutility can repair drives. There is no defrag setup built in. Its not really necessary. 2)I need to find a DIVX/XVID/HD264 filters, so can anyone recomend me a codec pack that will do the job for the MBP? for divx, download the divx player. xvid i dont know. but Quicktime supports H.264 out of the box. 3)How hard is it to network the MBP to my PC and to share the net connection, I dont have my wireless setup at the moment so the only way is thru networking cable. share a folder on the pc over the network. Click "Go" in the apple menubar, then click "network". find the pc on the list, click on it, then click connect. it will ask for the PC's user and password. 4)Im trying to install some software onto the MBP and it asks me for a password, but i have asked my friend and she comes up blank, do the MAC's have a default password for software installations? If not is there some software where i could reset it or bypass it? Nope, you need her password. 5)How would i go about uninstalling software installed on the MBP? there have been some botched attempts at certain softwares which are messing up the system and i would like to remove as they are unnessary, so how would i go about this. Find and drag the program to the trash.
