No, im not here to create an "apple hate thread", but im curious - apart from very sexy looks (why hasnt other companies copied?) they offer mediocre pretty features for the prices you pay. Most notably for the laptops - where it looks like everything is propriatory. Cant you buy 3rd party stuff like ram or wireless cards instead of paying massively over-inflated prices?? How do they make their money?

Not only that - im unsure of the OS'. Can you run x86 stuff (ok, read microsoft compatible) on em without emulating absolutely everything?? I have to admit - the latest Mac OS is damn nice, why hasnt MS "copied" its smoothness of use? Mac OS is unix based right?

Im just confused as to how apple makes money, cause there cant be that many designers in the world that has Mac only software.

One of the major reasons Apple have their own little market is due to compatability. Everything is propriatory. They wrote the drivers for THEIR os which is running on THEIR machine with THEIR customised chipset/bios.

Most people will buy parts/upgrades etc from Apple direct, and most wont mind about the extra £10 or so, for one major reason, if Apple sell it on their site, or in their stores, they support it fully. Be it a game, a digital camera, memory, it doesn't matter.

Finally, as to the OS. You can run x86 software under OSx, jst not naitively, i.e. under VMWare or suchlike. To be honest, this isn't an issue for most people, as when u think, most major apps are available (Office 2004 for Mac, Studio MX 2004, Adobe Studio CS, etc) and most of those apps run BETTER on my mac than on my pc!

This isn't some sorta "love mac" post, but i'm just illustrating a point, that Apple have their market and its for that reason they are stable and stay in business.

I understand :) But what im on about: £179 for a wireless CARD for an apple laptop!? And £80 for another 256meg PC2100 Sodimm, that's £30 from crucial? That's insane. Im afraid its not £10, i wouldnt be picking my jaw up from the floor if it was 10/20quid difference, which is what i was expecting as i nosed thru the apple site.

Also, what happens if people (like myself) already have copious amounts of MS OS software and dont want to spend time and money finding mac compatible products just for a mac?

I have seen stuff run a LOT better on the OSX though - friend brought his ibook into uni and it was superb for speed and smoothness, yet, they are only 1ghz (?) machines with 256k cache?? Powerpoint looks like a kids toy compared to the Mac equivilent.

EDIT: Ahh they use 128bit tech.
