ok, i have just bought an airport extreme to use with my dads powerbook, i use AOL broadband which uses a USB adsl modem, which i thought would be fine since the airport exteme has a USB connection on the back of it. But when i got the airport i found i couldn't use the USB on the airport to share my conection Plus the modem tht aol supplied me with doesn't have an eternet port on the back so i am a bit stuck really! any1 got any suggestions of what i should do??
Well, it seems to me from some google image search that there is a phone line to the APE, so plug in the phone line into it and configure the settings. The APE I assume would also be compatible with windows computers, like normal routers being compatible with all OS's.
From what he has seen looking at Google Image pictures of the Airport Extreme it looks like it has a built in modem so try plugging your phone cable that's plug into your modem you got from AOL into the Airport Extreme and see if you can configure it up.
You sure? I haven't that I don't think. Whats the model number of the APE (AirPort Extreme)? Don't forget the word "modem" does not mean 56k, a telephone line will plug into a 56k modem AND a broaband modem!
He(seebul) is right. http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/ It's a 56k V.90 Modem to allow you to dial In to your network remotely and for dial up connections.
Tbh, I think that is a bit odd! Best thing to do is to get a normal router (not apple branded), they will work for any computer. I reccomend Belkin and not Linksys or D-link. Netgear are good too, and quite cheap now.
Apple Branded hardware works for any computer because its just the 802.11x standard. All he has to really do is buy a new modem with an Ethernet out so it can be plugged into the Airport Extreme.
Well he has already bought it so buying another router would be just a waste when all he needs is a new modem with Ethernet out. OT: Apple really rip people off with the Ipod. I love my Creative Zen 20GB.
Read it and make sure it says ADSL gateway or Broadband Modem, or something that indicates you can share a broadband Internet connection.
