I would make it the web server, not a web server, the web server.

People who want something very quick, that is very easy to maintain. The new server cases look like everything can be swapped in 30seconds or less, with just your fingers :)

I believe the pricing isn't half bad either with the new ones, but I've not done a comparison.

How hard could it possibly be to spit out bits? Get a specialized RAID chip in there and be done with it.

That said, I could easily fill that. Quickly... not so much, but that's more an issue of my bandwidth and computing power, or lack thereof. I'm continually having to clean crap out of my terabyte just to get more crap in there.

I could fill a Petabyte, although I may get lost in it.

Thing is, there are quicker, bigger or cheaper ways to get the job done (1 Petabyte EMC Symmetrix anyone?). I suppose they arent as pretty (although all of the big server OEMs have come on leaps and bounds in the looks department in the last 5 years. After all, what self respecting organisation wants a tatty datacentre? :D )

I had a discussion about xServes recently with a friend of mine (who, I should mention, is both a fanboy and an employee of Apple) and we concluded that its likely the only company that uses xServes is Apple themselves.

A machine room full of xserves would certainly be a pretty sight though, if a bit bland.

    Nice :)

Now why can't they make a consumer-level version? You know, drop all of the useless-for-home fibre channel stuff for a standard GbE port and cheapen it down by not giving each drive its own ATA channel, etc? I just can't figure out where the $6000 for the entry-level 1TB model is going...

Sorry, little pet peeve of mine recently. All this push for media center boxes but consumer-level fileserver appliances are still insanely overpriced.
