Sorry mate, I can't see the difference. For me, this is the exact some thing as if you had a little kid and complain that Ferrari makes overpriced cars. It doesn't do what you want it to (transport your wife, kid and a buggy) and it cost you 10x as much as a Ford SMAX. Or you bought a Canon 5D MKIII and then complain that it doesn't do what you wanted it to and costs over 30x as much as a sony point&shoot. Hell, it costs 3.500euro and doesn't even come with a flash! What a ripoff. I know the comparison doesn't match perfectly.. but you catch my drift.
You've just reiterated my point, they serve distinctly purposes (in my opinion) As does Apple to some extent, with the camera example, the canon will take far better pictures, far better video, when compared to the Sony, they shouldn't be compared really. Not in the same price range (by a long way), nor are they competitors. Whereas Apple is often considered a direct competitor to a Windows based PC, and as I said, in the end it comes down to the end use, if you want to play games, a Windows PC is far superior, and I'm sure if you wanted to do something else (I've no idea) then the Apple would be far better.
Fixed. Look, Apple just caters to a mainstream non-techie crowd who want to use computers as tools, transparently and easily. Obviously it does it well, because its products are selling like hotcakes. This is not people being sheep or brainlessly following fashion; it has something to do with the fact that these products work really well for them. They don't want to tinker. They don't want to overclock. They just want to Facebook, and email, and message, browse the web and play some music and watch silly YouTube videos. Others just want to write their thesis or do their graphis design job and focus on just that --getting on with the job-- without distractions or nagging ("Do you want me to clean up your desktop icons?" --which Windows asks again only a minute after you dismissed the balloon-- or "Windows has new updates to install..."). Seriously, I spend more time maintaining the frigging thing than working with it. I am perhaps more appreciative of these things because I use my PC also for work. I use my iPhone mainly for work. When I need to call a GP about a suicidal patient, or email a colleague about a referral, or book a patient appointment in my diary, I just need it to work. I don't need pretty themes. I don't need fancy ringtones. I don't need it to act as a 3G router for six devices simultaneously that I don't carry and use simultaneuously. I don't need a marginally faster processor making my battery life marginally shorter. I just need the thing to work, reliably, and not have to think too hard about how to work it. My iPhone does that. That's all I want. And of course there is the market dominance. I am tempted by an Android tablet, I really am. In many respects its OS is superior to iOS. But all the cool app stuff is happening in the iPad market, because that's the dominant device at the moment. It's a self-reinforcing cycle. Competitors got to the party too late, and now they are struggling to catch up.
All that you just wrote is answering the question that was written. Don't ask a question if you don't expect an answer. Pookey you are too hipster to be hipster.
Tbh; I can't afford to eat for a week at the moment, but I've used macs before and one of my friends uses apple almost exclusvely, without turning into a head-upass fanboy. Somehow. Even he admits that, while it is all very nice; it's overpriced. Side note; not everyone just happens to have £1000 spare for an entry level iMac. Does thst mean they arw all, by definition, Apple Haterz?
Clearly not, as they haven't expressed a dislike for Apple. If someone says 'I hate Apple' then clearly they just can't afford anything. I'm not saying they're not overpriced... most of their stuff is. But I'd still happily pay it. There's a standard way superior to anything else.
This would be acceptable if they(and many other companies) weren't paying the workers a abysmal portion of the profits. That's a lot of sterotyping. I would never pay for an Apple iPod, not because it's too expensive, but because there are things available that off me a product better suited for my needs and wants, in the portable media player case, that would be players from Cowon and Hifiman.
Tbf, I haven't read the rest of the thread, but it's pretty much that for me. I don't want to go to a cinema to watch an advert that lies about not being able to pull a plug out of the wall by accident. Or be told I'm not creative because I use a windows machine. I've helped people buy machines for artistic reasons and saved them a lot of money also. On one occasion, I managed to buy a higher spec laptop(by a long way by the way... Plus decent screen, so they weren't missing out), a spare monitor(ips), a 1tb external usb 3 hdd, bag, 3 years onsite support, office spreads and various things like mice, usb sticks, bla bla bla ... And still came in £150 under the mac. That's disgusting to be quite honest. Absolutely appalling. Especially when you look at how much their services like onsite support cost. I have no qualms with their OS. I don't like their attitude towards flash, no matter how "right" they might be. I'd like to make my own decision about what is crashing my machine.
Haha, that's just comical. I could afford to buy one if I wanted to, but I still done, because I don't want one, because they won't be any better than my PCs for what I do, it's as simple as that.
Well-known companies, like celebrities, live under a microscope. Every consumer electronics company uses Foxconn or some similar manufacturer; every company does the patent trolling shuffle. They all make a healthy profit where they can and they all promise that your product will make you hipper, smarter, multi-orgasmic...er. Apple is no different; they just play the game better than most. So The iPhone 4 had antenna-gate? Samsung had it too, but nobody noticed. The 4S has battery life issues? Every HTC Android has has battery life issues. The new iPad gets warm? Comparative independent testing shows that the Asus Transformer Prime, Kindle Fire and Blackberry Playbook get warmer. Yes, really. And if Apple has marked up their iPad so insanely, why have other manufacturers struggled for over a year to release a comparative product for the same price? Google's mission statement was: "Don't be evil". That was before it ripped off iOS with Android, compromised with China on censorship of its search engine an did its bit of patent trolling. Microsoft was in cahoots with Apple in the patent bidding wars against Google, and if you think Apple is overpriced, check out what they charge for Windows or Office. If you think Apple is a closed garden, get a load of Windows Mobile. Everybody is at it. Although to give Bill Gates his due, he is more generous with charity than Steve Jobs was.
What point am I missing other than maybe some people value aesthetics more than me? I, obviously don't buy apple products. Doesn't mean I don't look at a laptop and say that looks really nice... But when I get down to brass tax and I see others can do more for less with longer assurance if quality, it seems like a no brainer. If that premium wasn't as unjustifiable, then it wouldn't matter... Say I was only paying another £100 for what is essentially a mass produced piece of design I wouldn't mind. But when someone like asus launch a product like the Zen book for a massive undercut, demonstrating how much they slap on for no reason other than somehow people will pay for it, it makes me think. Let alone the aforementioned example. Tbh, I get the iPhone. I like them, but I'd rather android. I would own an iPad, but won't justify it while I own a smartphone. Those products, the premium is small. Whether the percentage margin/premium is the same, I don't care to investigate. But I can see why you would choose one. And i take it I'm not missing something about their support. I know everyone has a bad experience at some point with all these companies, but when i was living near a music college in my teens making music, the amount of stuff that went wrong with the crappy white macbooks was a joke. And these people had aftercare and were made to shell out on batteries and all sorts. Common issues like dvd drive failure... Wireless breaking. Lots after a year became incapable of even running off a battery.
Nothing against Apple, owned a few iPod's etc but I feel there is a better alternative for me in most areas they cover, be it pc or handset. One thing I don't get is the iPhone 4g however, all my friends have them and they suck at the one thing I would deem important, being a phone!
You all have very good points. And I like the fact that this hasn't turned into a flame war. Good job, mods. You extinguished the flames of arguments. Couple last words. One of my biggest pet peeves is calling the tech the wrong thing. Anyone else annoyed when people call the tower of the comuter the "CPU"? So, why do people call my tablet an "iPad", when it clearly has "Toshiba" on the back, and it is pitch black? (image source Engadget) (image source AppAdvice) You don't even have to be colorblind to see that they look very little alike! Also, like I've said before, with a RAM upgrade, my 2006 model Satellite is running like a charm!
