I'm thinking of upgrading my card, so was looking through the reviews on here.
Noticed that no directx 12 cards are due out in the market this year.. got me thinking?

Do you think they are purposely being held back because of the nextgen consoles coming out. From what I've read, we know both contain directx 11 cards.. amd and nivida - so whats the betting there's some clause that says they must'nt bring out the dx12 cards until AFTER the launch of the consoles?

    Just thinking out aloud.. ;)

Im pretty sure there isn't a DX 12 upcoming, as GPUs struggle with DX11 as it is.

However on a slightly related note, DirectX is a Microsoft technology, so how come sony can use it in the ps3?

    It's stagnated somewhat.

I was only pondering today how the card I bought a year ago hasn't actually changed in price at all!

Direct X is a windows only technology, it's the software layer between windows and the GPU itself. M$ hasn't committed to even developing DX12 hence no mention of cards that support it.

AMD champion OpenGL/OpenCL, I would be surprised that having next gen consoles sewn up they'll use this opportunity to advance that agenda over DX and CUDA. Not to mention Valve showing openGL being very effective on the Linux side, more developers could favor it open DX. At the end of the day DX is just a way of allowing programmers access to the underlying hardware. The driver team then chooses to support OpenGL/DX and how it translates to the physical hardware. Both offer some for of AI, physics, shader access etc. They're really a way of allowing software developers to develop a program without having to worry about every single card configuration out there.

Struggling with DX 11 is a great reason for a DX 12, performance improvements are possible as well as the addition of new features. Would be good if they focused on performance, to be honest.

DX is licenced to others to use, I guess. Just like blu-ray being a Sony tech.

its a known? MS said that DX11.1 was win8 (and beyond) only

but bowing to pressure MS added *some* DX11.1 features to Win7

That's just soo wrong.. MS never learn - always do what they can to dump all over the home user, whats it been? - less than a year of W8, and already anything you bought before it is dated and unsupported.

erm its what Apple already do - that and closed off OS. MS want a piece of the pie.

that and DX11.1 is really code improvements rather than anything ground breaking (that and if its true only AMD fully support it anyway)

GPU's will continue to develop regardless of DX version. GPU makers aren't going to stop pushing performance just because no DX 12 is imminent.

Do we actually need a DX12? We have near photorealistic graphics on DX11 for those games that aren't developed for console with PC as a vague afterthought (i.e. skyrim).

This argument reminds me when DX10 was introduced and many graphics cards touted compatibility but woefully underperformed when Company of Heroes had the DX10 patch. Caused quite a backlash because people bought their DX10 card for the express purpose of it working well with those games. The DX10 GPU partners just cashed in on this thirst! :D
