I was bitten by a nostalgia bug the other day. It told me to get bent and download Steel Panthers: World at War (426MB @ http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/sp_waw.htm) and that's what I did. I've been playing frantically shooting Commies, bombing the Nazi and flammenwerfing the USMC. It was fun.

At some point, though, it starts to grow old. I'm a bit fed up with commanding a never-ending stream of mid-18th-century - equipment. We've all seen it. Every other war game that comes out, deals with WWII. The rest that don't are FPS's. I know about Steel Panthers II and III because I used to own them. But are there others? After googling for hours and searching here I haven't found any tactical goodies that fit the criterion.

So I want to lend your expertise. Are there any tactical strategy wargames that depict modern battles?

There's Joint Task Force. Part of the game (that I've played so far) takes place in Somalia.

Well, you could have a look at World in Conflict. Basically Russia invades the USA. Great effects and graphics. Is only a Demo atm im affraid.
Or you could invest in Command and Conquer 3.
But, i think WIC is your best bet for the time being.

Only until Friday! (Looking forward to picking up a copy after college)

Both excellent games. Get both. Or grab the demos first but neither game will disappoint RTS fans.

Frankly I was a bit disappointed with CnC3. I was a huge fan of RA2, so I was expecting to love it. But to me it was just an average rts that didn't bring the same enjoyment factor while playing. It was quite boring for me.

However, World in Conflict is excellent. This game has got me back into the rts genre. I just love the focus on tactics and fast gameplay, and how in online play you're dropped right into the chaos, instead of waiting for people to join and playing out a match like traditional rts online play.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've played CnC3, but I'll give Joint Task Force and World in Conflict a try then.

Command and Conquer Generals sounds like your cup of tea. Get the original release and Zero Hour expansion. That should provide plenty of entertainment. Best played with a group of mates in huge LAN battles. :D

P.S before you give up on WWII titles you might want to try Company Of Heroes. Awesome game.

Dawn of War series to be off topic.

On topic, if you can find them, the Close Combat games were fantastic, especially CC3 The Russian Front. Such a good feeling to complete.

Seconded - Company of Heroes has amazing gameplay and graphics.

Ever seen a V-1 used as an anti-tank weapon?

Wow! You really got into this. Thanks for the tips. I have to agree with mookboy that Dawn of War and all the Close Combats were great games.

I'll add both Company of Heroes and C&C Generals to my toplay-list. (So much to do!)
