I've read here and there about issues with Corsair memory and Ryzen CPUs, specifically that the RAM doesn't run at it's full speed and setting it up do so causes hardware problems and system restarts. Is it not recommended to mix Corsair RAM with Ryzen? The memory I have in mind for my 5900X build with an Asus Tuf Pro WiFi X570 mobo is Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 Memory (2x16GB)
Fairly sure issues relate to older generations of Ryzen and the 5xxx series have a pretty robust memory controller but as always if you want to be sure of compatibility always check the Memory QVL list from your motherboard manufacturer and buy memory based off of that.
Every CPU, every board and every stick/brand of memory will have someone somewhere with issues. Given that scan is solely Corsair memory and they have a large SI department I would say that these issues are likely just one off issues or issues from those who are a little clueless. Buy it, you’ll be fine.
I just buy ram from Crucial. They guarantee compatibility and I have never had a problem in at least 16 years of buying from Crucial.
Yeah Corsair RAM was often a disasterous choice for 1st gen Ryzen, and not great in the Ryzen 2000 series either. AFAIK though, Zen 2 and Zen 3 don't have any serious issues.
I have some corsair memory with a 3600x and B450 board that wont run at 3200mhz for me. It will run at 3000mhz and tighter timings though so can't get too excited. The memory wasn't on the QVL list and I didn't check before hand as normally its a non-issue. At this point I'm just waiting a few years and will move to a DDR5 system as it does everything I need from it at the moment.
Thanks everyone for your feedback and info, I checked the memory QVL for the Asus TUF Pro X570 and the Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16) isn't listed, but then how often do the manufacturers update their compatibility docs?
@giskard I've always stuck to Crucial personally. https://uk.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/bl2k16g32c16u4b/CT19501527 Is the kit I have on my B450 board and is currently just over £92 for 2x16Gb 3200Mhz at the moment. Not tried pushing it but many have had the kit up to 3600 if you can be bothered. Crucial site says the kit is 100% compatible with the Tuf Pro.
I almost exclusively run Corsair memory - and it has never run at full chat on either a 1600, 3600, or 5600x. Or on three different motherboards x470, b450, x570. Best I've ever had is 3400mhz. Some of the bargain basement vengeance stuff runs at 2733 or whatever that goofy 'not quite 3000' speed is. That stuff isn't highly rated speed wise anyway, so I'm not too surprised or bothered - esx doesn't care how fast the ram is in my application of it, just how much there is. I think it's because it's four sticks, but I haven't tested yet. I've never been able to buy any ram on a compatibility list, not buying bleeding edge more often than not, the part numbers have usually changed by the time I get there! I believe the spare with the 1600 and 32gb geil runs at 3600, but it's been a while since I booted that and I've no means to do so right at this moment to check.
QVL for that board looks pretty comprehensive, they have even qualified RAM upto 4800Mhz which is amazing as that is really far out of spec, I'd say they have done quite a good job on a list there, for an extra couple of quid there are alternatives @ 3600Mhz that would make more sense to me than taking a punt on 3200C16 not on the list unless you already have it. If returns are good where you are buying then go for the cheap non QVL'd stuff but know that there is some risk, I did this with 32Gb for my server, it did not work for me but was 50% of the price of qual'd gear so for the sake of postage and a bit of hassle I thought I would take a punt. Ryzen 5xxx will allow you to run the memory interface at half the memory speed and 3600 is the sweet spot, ideally you'd get some 3600 CL14 but that tends to be pricey so CL16 is fine.
Indeed it does but the part number configuration id CT19501527 isn't listed in the QVL, which makes me wonder what other RAM that would work with the Asus TUF X570 Pro isn't listed. Maybe I'm better off going with Crucial and cancel the Corsair order from Scan.
It's worked fine for me. Both with first gen Threadripper (1920x) and the 3000 series. I've had it in two boards now (B450 and X570) on a 3600 and no issues. That said I didn't use it in TR until it was very mature. As for the X570 TUF? I have Teamgroup 8 pack in there. Four sticks. IIRC they are 4133, which is obviously a pipe dream on the CPU I have (3950x). However, I do have all four at 3700 CL15. Again, no issues.
I had a few issues with Corsair 3600mhz and a Ryzen 3600 initially (parts in my sig), but they were all fixed with a BIOS update, so I put it down to a newly released board. It's now rock solid at XMP and Corsair isn't on the QVM list.
Yeah I could not get my Dominators to run 3200 on the 1920x until the bios was updated. It was going to 2666. However, I think RAM issues on all Ryzen CPUs are now pretty much a thing of the past. TBH? I don't really think it was the RAM in the first place, just AMD being newbs. Which thankfully they seem to have addressed now. I've run all sorts of RAM with TR now (Micron 2666 etc) and it's been fine so long as you use the most up to date bios.
The RAM in the system in my sig started as a 2 DIMM kit, which ran happily at 3600MHz, but when I dropped in another 2 DIMMs it refused to go higher than its current speed. I'm told this is just a 3xxx series issue, and 5xxx series 'should' be fine, but you never know!
It's not an issue as such, official spec is 3200 for 2 sticks and 2933 for 4 sticks, anything more is overclocking and YMMV But yes I have run the same 3600 RAM since Ryzen 1k and for the first two gens I could not get more than 3333Mhz out of it, with 5k I am running 4 sticks at 3800Mhz with 1900 IF.
