When I'm visiting someone, i usually put my phone on the table and don't use it. I visit my friends to socialize, not to update my FB status (I'm not a FB addict anyway, I eat my food, I don't take pictures of it).
We usually enact the phone stack rule in the pub, ple the phones on top of each other first one to reach for it pays for the next round regardless works well. When im walking I may browse something if I remember I need to look for something im bad around the supermarket i put the list on my phone usually. Not a fan of walking around wiht my head buried in the phone you miss whats going on around you and its just plain anti social!
Reading or writing emails. Messaging friends, family, clients or colleagues. Reading or replying to forum threads. Ordering tools or parts. Looking in on a computer, server or network somewhere. Yes, I use my phone a lot. Yes, in public. It's 2015 and I'm a busy person. Deal with it.
Also, I thinks it's a bit of a misnomer to call them phones theses days, what we are carrying around are mobile computers with phone functionality.
Spotify. I can never organise a playlist from start to finish and listen without touching my phone. I always get these phases of 'Ooooo lets listen to _____' so I'm constantly changing up music as I walk.
while walking and such, I may have my headphones or earbuds in, but I don't like walking with my head down while staring at my phone. On the subway, etc. I'll either read from my ereader, or listen to my music. Don't drive, but when I used to / start driving again, I don't plan on using my phone. I know a lot of people check at red lights, etc. but it isn't worth being distracted or getting pulled over for. If you're driving, the message or notification can wait until later.
I use my smart phone a huge amount, I admit to spending a huge amount of time on it. This is in part due to the amount of travel I do. Almost everything I do on the phone is work or family orientated. Some of the things I do are: Work: Email - Native App Reviewing of documents - Full set of apps for this, Google Drive, Sheet, Docs, Power Point, Work, Office Lens (This is AWESOME) Excel etc. Note taking - I have not used a pen or paper for almost 2 year. My entire working life lives in Evernote, I live in this app on both my phone and iPad. Automation - Due to the number of applications I use, I am a BIG user of IFTTT - so this is an essential part of my mobile usage Admin - I use both Google Admin and AWS admin applications again for work. Google Hangouts and Skype - Heavy usage for international calls and IM with work guys. Travel Use Google Maps for everything! British Airways, American Airlines, Aer Lingus, Passbook all get used daily for flight checkins, seat allocating and booking of flight - I take an average of 4-6 flights a week, so being able to do this on the go is essential. Banking Again due to the travel I do, Barlcays, Lloyds and HSBC apps all get used daily. Shopping Ebay, Amazon and Autotrader get used a good few times a week Keeping updated BBC, Tumblr, BBC Sport and PremRugby are my main applications to seeing whats happening in the big wide world - I dont rememeber the last time I sat and watch the news in front of a TV Entertainment Heavey user of Spotify for Music HUGE user of Audible - again due to the amount of travelling I do, I use this as my only resource for reading - travelling with books is really a no no for me. - Travel light travel fast... Fitness I track my food, fitness and weight using RunKeeper, Withings and MyFitnessPal Bit Tech 90% of my bit tech browsing is done via my phone!! Calendar - this is another big one, as my entire life is digital, this has many shared work and family calendars. Used daily. Social Again due to the travelling I use FB and FaceTime alot to keep in touch with what the wife and boys are doing. My eldest wont talk to me on the phone unless we can see my face... the age we live in now. Games (Rarely - Mainly if I dont have a current audio book) angry birds, Hexagon - nothing too hardcore. Photos My eldest often likes to see the places I go, so I try and take one photo per day for he and I to look at when I get home from my travels. Uber and Halo Use alot especially UBER in london and the US. So I guess I am " one of those" LOL and the above is why!
Whereas I couldn't live or work without my smartphone now. I've always been someone who embraces and adapts to technology
Before I leave the house I've got headphones in, then they don't get taken out until I've gone through the tube and got to the office. If it wasn't for the fact I get them in the office, I'd pick up a paper for the tube. Otherwise, I'm too 'special' to type and walk at the same time, so usual check what I've been sent and if its pressing stop and reply to it, or leave it to wait until I've got where im going.
My phone is so busy doing....whgatever an unused phone is doing in the background, i sometimes can't even take calls. Maybe we need to get back to having a seperate device for calls
i always think that 'THEY' are just walking around waiting to collect a Darwin award of some description
Around town I'm usually playing Ingress so I'll have my phone out and be periodically checking for portals and such but in order to do anything more than a quick look down, I'll always move over to the side of the pavement out of the way, there are enough people about with no apparent concept of 'in the way' without me adding to their numbers. On the bus, I'm normally by myself so checking my phone and reading a few bits and pieces is not an issue, I'm not bothering anyone, there's no sound coming from it and Iv'e seen the route hundreds of times.
I'm on the train for an hour a day. I check Twitter first since I follow people in different time zones. I tend to go to bed before they do, so I catch up in the morning. Next is Flipboard, a news app. It's mostly crap I can skip, but there's usually 1-4 interesting articles each morning. On my commute home I play Alto's Adventure on iOS, study for the ARE's, or read a comic on my Nvidia Shield tablet. I go in and out of being really into audiobooks, but the sync between the audible webapp and the phone app isn't very consistent, and neither scrub well at all, so if I'm not exactly where I left off I can spend 10 minutes just trying to get back to where I was on my other device. It's super annoying.
