I guess the big question here is... why are the forums so quiet? Is there something missing that used to be here that isn't anymore?

    ;)

    BTW update ... new pix!

I too feel the lonlieness in the forums. Even though i'm not a big poster... More fun stuff!
I think people are overcompensating the spaming that sometimes happens. Thus not posting.

Dare I invoke the wrath of the mods by saying "treasure hunt"?:worried:

On second thought, I wont. There used to be the test *cough*spam*cough* forum but it was necessary to get rid of that.

There used to be more funnies but it seemed that everytime one was posted it was plagued with "this is old" and "repost" posts. That would be enough to put me off posting. It's a shame really because I hadn't seen most of them before. It gave me the status of Comedy God from my friends when I started forwarding things on to them.

There is a new one that was started - we got rid of the old one because it got out of control. :)

I agree to some extent - it can certainly put you off posting if you think 'hmmm has this been posted before, I dunno, I better not risk it'

Maybe some people just got a bit hostile - I don't know, I'm keen to find out though.

well iv noticed a bit of post drop, and it seemed to match with certain new members not posting anymore/alot less for what ever reason (back to school/banned). and i think as well as them theres been a general lack of posts from the back to school peeps.

and didnt the new "treasure hunt" get killed off as well because the same people started spamming it again?

edit- in awnser to my own question yes Xen0phobiak killed it because of off topic spam.

Yep, and the new one got shut within the first week. :D

Can't blame the mods tho, it was spammed like crazy. Half of the spams were people telling others not to spam.

Feel free to keep starting treasure hunt threads. I'm more than happy for them to exist. Its when they start to get messy due to the off topic posts that I'll close them down.

I'm trying to encourage the kind of thing where you cut plants down so they grow back bigger, but i cant remember what the word is .

Something to take into consideration would be perhaps scrapping post counts for something like a reputation system? Isn't there an option for that within vBulletin? It may inspire people to post more productivly rather than crap just to boost their post count.

Gardening? So bit-tech is to become a gardening website?
Hmmm...maybe that's why the forums are so quiet...

see thats a good idea, because atm more posting seems to go on in the general section rather then in the computer related ones.

i think iv mentioned befor doing away with the post count in the genral section, and removing however many posts they people in there from everyones post count as a way to encorage people back to other parts of the board, but i know this would make some people very unhappy. :D

I've pushed for the removal of post counts from the userbit in showthread.php for a while now - I still want that to happen. It'd stop a lot of the obsessive OMG MY POST COUNT IS HIGHER THAN YOURS crap that crops up occasionally.

Personaly, I think that the forums are over moderated, some times its the spammy threads that are the best as they can be really funny. For example the old test forum was always a good laugh to read. however as soon as a thread gets slightly off topic its closed down.

Perhaps a reserection of something similar to the test forum, or a sub forum of GD could help to relight the forums again?

I agree that the place has lost something recently, but there is still a massive user base that needs entertainment!!!

Any way just my view, but I think a few others will agree with it, what do you mods think? :thumb:

But then you would say that, with 10k posts 'n all  :hip:
I don't know whether the two are related, but the number of news/articles on the front page also seems to have slowed down over the last week or so...which means, of course, that we all have less to talk about

The test forum was quality. Bring something similar back (but one where it doesn't ++ your post count... :p)
