ok went into sharper image to day (cool gadgets-r-us here in the USA) and saw a vertical open CD player KEWL so i figured out how to do the same with a CD rom drive, push a buttin and instead of the tray poping out of the front of the case a panel then a tray lifts out of the top of the case, problem is i cant figure out how to get the worm gear drive for the screw lift to fit in the space and i dont have the money to go buy stuff anyone got anyideas???

i know this probebly sounds stupid but i think it would be an Origanlke idea and i want to have something that noone has oin my case but god damned if i can get the fitting and work to movement ratios right.

    anyone got any ideas PLEASE.

im doing it this way so the software/firmware eject still works i could put a simple latch release on it but then it wouldnt rise out on its own power or be ejectable from an application.

sounds like an electronics question for the elctronics forum :grr:

you really didn't make the question very clear either.

I think its quite clear what he was asking!

I thought of trying this on my case but you lose a lot of space vertically mounting the drive. I dont understand why you dont have room for the worm gear. Can you not leave the CD drive in its original chassis and just have a slot cut in the top of your case for the cd tray and stealth it?

Post some pics if you can to help clear things up :p

Not to flame you but a "worm" gear is definatly mechanical :)

I think he's looking to create a Betamax type CD player. Very retro

    I don't think it's clear.

Are you intending to leave the tray horizontal, but it ejects vertically? (Betamax style lol)

Or are you meaning to have the tray vertical as well?

I'm pretty sure you mean the former, so here goes:

It will vary according to the brand of drive you're modding, but I can't see that you could do it without removing at least part of the housing. That will leave you with clearance problems so you'll need to solve those to mount your drive. (maybe cut out one side of your cage and mount from the other side?)

I can pretty much assure you that no one has done this mod (if you mean the betamax style) so don't expect someone to come along and post a step-by-step walkthrough with pics. I may be wrong, but I haven't seen it done.

I do apologise Lazydemon i interpreted it as toaster style 'pop up out the top mod'. :sigh:

    The line:
made me think he wanted the drive mounted and ejecting vertically.

your right it was a littl unclear
ok the drive remains horizontel so does the try but instead of sliding out it LIFTsfrom the top of the case, leaving a panel flush with the top so you dont see it till it ejects, then the panels lifts and the tray then fallows it, yeah i guess you could say simmiler to the old BetaMax VCRs but i wont it to still be the size of a standerd CDrom drive but im running into problems with getting it all to fit right and still be the same size and i dont know if i want to use like a screw/worm gear setup or a sliding "gate" style lift, what do you guys think would work best?

Well I've given it some thought and here's what I would sudgest:

I basing it on my experieces of Technical Lego. I sugest the you use a standard cog and a flat plate with teeth on. I tshould look a bil like this

    _
    | > * (that's suposed to be the cog :D)
    | >

The cog will be fixed at the top of the CD bay (as shown) and will be fixed to your motor. When it turns the teeth will move vertically.

I think a worm gear system will not work because of the clearance issues. I also think it will become a little loose in the upper most position of your tray.

You will also get much more movement per rotation with method one (I think). I think that this method is the standard way that horizontal CD trays work.

Good luck to you any way :p

yes the cog and teeth is how it worlks but to do what your sugesting i would have to change the pinion on the motor and i dont know how far it would move (dont want it to "derail" and fall on the laser DOH, and i would have to cut through thee drive and have the toothed bar exit through the bottem of the drive, but thanks ill try it anyway, but it looks like i might just try a sliding gate idea, ill post results when i got some as well as pics if i can, but anymore ideas on the matter are more then welcome

ok it should work, im going to use a "J"bar lifting arm. anyone ever been on a buss? look at the doors and how they are conected the post that rotates is conected to a ber shaped like a J or U so it pushes out then forward, attach that straight to the eject motor, of course it wont be that simple im guna have to make it more like an F bar but dude IM STOKED THIS MIGHT JUST WORK
