    School Official Wants Gays Dead

Arkansas school board member Clint McCance believes "queers" and "fags" should kill themselves — that is, if they don't get AIDS and die first.

Responding to a call to wear purple last Wednesday to support LGBT youth, McCance wrote the following message on his Facebook page:

Playing devil's advocate, he definitely has a right to his opinion.

The thing I dislike, is that he seems to believe that he's empowered to perform a hate crime against a segment of society because of that opinion.

This is just as much a hate crime as racism is, IMHO.

I can't see his job lasting very long, unless the whole department is full of people like him.

He absolutely does have a right to his opinion. I don't think anyones going to question that. And it IS Arkansas, so don't hold your breath for the school to get rid of him.

Look at it from the bright side, in America even the homosexuals have guns, so we might end up seeing this guy killed.

And here we have example A of what too much religion does to someone's brain.

"McCance responded with, "I would disown my kids they were gay. They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid christian beliefs. See it infects everyone.""

Yes, but he also has a right to keep it to himself.

He is a government official with accountability to the public. He is an employee of an institution that teaches children. If my child went to his school, I'd now want to check whether he feels as free to voice his opinion in school as he does on Facebook.

Don't get me wrong: he can say whatever he wants on Facebook. He cannot say whatever he wants in school, or as a representative of that school.

Why am I suddenly reminded of that SouthPark episode on 'correction camps' for 'confused youths'? :) Some things are just too real for comfort...

Couldn't have just said "Not a fan of gay people. Not something I believe in. Not wearing purple. If they don't like it, not my problem."?

Of course, the ability to say WHATEVER you like means that people will find out how much of an idiot you are by your own volition, so it cuts both ways. Hopefully this guy will get his comeuppance. Might I suggest purple food dye in a water balloon? ;)

Well, his Facebook post doesn't say he wants them dead. It says he'll wear purple if they kill themselves. He also never says that he believes they should do so, no one is encouraged.

The author is really putting words in his mouth with that headline. Obviously no one's on his side and will question it, so he gets away with blatant exaggerations.

The part in the article where he says he enjoys when they get AIDS and die is a little more of a gray area, but there is a distinction between enjoying and wanting. Not much of one and he's really walking the line, but he (purposefully or by blind luck) never explicitly says he wants gays to die from AIDS. To be even picker, it's simply assumed that he wants them to get AIDS and die because it means they end up dead. Maybe he wants them to get AIDS so that they suffer its ill effects, and death is merely an unavoidable part of AIDS that he doesn't specifically want.

It seems pretty obvious to assume he means everything the author says, but based on what he did say people are being a bit dramatic. As has been said, welcome to the South. You can probably find other public figures explicitly saying they want gays to die if you look hard enough.

Oh, well that's much better. Here I was thinking the guy was a bigot, but since he doesn't specifically state, in those exact words, that he wants them dead...

Like Nexxo, I wonder to what extent he attempts to bring his particular religious beliefs into the public school system. After all, where in the Constitution does it specifically state, in those exact words, "separation of church and state."

True, the author's article is a bit aggressive, but when McCance said he enjoyed the fact that homosexuals "give each other AIDS and die," he went on to state, "If you're not against it, you might as well be for it." Did he actively promote it? It's arguable, but it's a pedantic argument. His language paints a pretty clear picture, in my opinion.

Even posting his comments on facebook should land him in trouble ordinarily, remember the girl that got fired for making insulting comments about her boss who was gay?

Personal beliefs are one thing, but basically implying that all homosexy people should die & burn in hell is clearly wrong, and doesnt exactly make him a model christian ( in terms of tolerance & understanding and not being a facist hypocrite )...

Someone really failed at reading comprehension. No wonder they've got a beef about school officials.

Anyway, I completely abhor this whole thing about wearing a certain colour because someone says it will honour someone who died, people that have a particular disease, or whatever. I stopped wearing what other people said I had to as soon as I started buying my own clothes.

Indeed... it just made my FB status... :p

    On subect:
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should keep your opinions to yourself for the sake of not seeming like a complete tosser.
While he is definitely entitled to huis opinion, he should have no illusion of the fact that due to his public position, this will come back to bite him in the arse...

While I get his point about 5 kids committing suicide and it turning into a "purple flag day" just because they "happen to have been gay" (Don't know the story behind it, hence i can't relate.), I'd say Ixnay on the homophobia.

It's a completely pedantic argument! But for saying a few things which aren't particularly more shocking than the words of others should he become some figurehead for hate in general? How does what he said make him the devil incarnate?

I make the arguement because, as Joe Solmonese is quoted as saying at the end of the article, "Clint McCance has put a face on the hate that devastates our young people". It's just putting up someone to point fingers at. There's great potential to look into a deeper issue and get people looking at how a man such as this can be allowed to work for a school district and potentially influence children with his hateful beliefs.

It leads people away from the bigger issue to point out one specific man. Why tackle the big issues when you can all agree "Clint McCance is an asshole! How could he say these attrocious things?!" and fume about it for a few minutes then forget about it.
