Dragging this into my previous post:

Obviously Will is being lighthearted, hence the winking emoticon, but his post does serve to show what I mean. When issues have a face put to them it becomes too personal. It becomes all to easy to get caught up in the man rather than the matter, even when making jokes.

Replace "Clint McCance" with "A school board member" and you'll have a completely different article and largely different discussion here. The fact that he has potential for great influence over children has been brought up, but it's not nearly as prominent as it would be.

I fully admit to being a bit of a joker at the best of times, and I'm always trying to eke a little bit of humour out of even the bleakest of situations.

I stand by my previous comments that the way this guy phrased himself on Facebook was bang out of order, and even possibly the fact that he mentioned it on Facebook at all is questionably wrong. It's just not cricket, even if his strict upbringing is to reject homosexuality. The Bible has a lot of messages in it about tolerance, understanding, and that the only judge of all people should be the big man in the sky. It's shocking how fast these all fly out of the window once the religious fundamentalists have an agenda to push.

School board member or not, he's a public figure. They all have a responsibility in shaping children, and society as a whole. That's the reason for the public outcry.

The school board have denounced his views, though. Linky

quoted for truth. the media can greatly aid in avoidance and distraction from the core issues. in this case, that begins with the question of when a school board member's personal opinions infringe on the rights of students to a non-hostile learning environment.

schoolboardmemberFAIL, aided and abetted by massive media FAIL.

issue shouldn't be with gays.. but the bullies in school

it's really the teachers- like my girls class, she tells her kids not to fight back and report it.. it's really a problem now days because a lot of parents in the low end districts encourage their kids to act like idiots

you have to tell a kid strait up.. your a bully.. sometimes they need to hear that to realize that what they are doing is effecting another person and build their character in the right direction.. they aren't hearing that at home

heck even adults.. sometimes they are worse than kids

That might not be enough. Especially in today's sociopolitical climate, greater emphasis is placed on being loud and informed, and anyone who desires reserved, informed discussion is often castigated as weak and inferior. Couple that with the right culture at home, with abusive parents, and you get a person whose world view is that being a bully isn't a negative thing. Being the bully means you are the stronger person; you are the one in charge.

I didn't make it; my post is an excerpt of the article. It's sensationalized as hell, though.

Looks like Clint McCance has decided to resign his position.

I do wonder if he'll really change any of his behaviors after this incident. He said that he's received all manner of hate mail, including death threats against his family. Surely that will serve to reinforce his world view.

One thing that people should take from this whole affair isn't necessarily that making stupid comments can backfire in big ways, but that anything you post on Facebook, regardless of your privacy settings, is fair game:

Does anyone still think that what they post is private just because they ticked that box in the profile settings? Guess again.

That's almost comical. A man posts a hateful message wishing for the death of a group of people, so how do people react? More hate and death wishes.

But of course, that's just reaping what he's sown, right? Eye for an eye is an acceptable method of justice, right?

The cycle of hatred is very hard to disturb. Most likely you'd end up getting run over :p
