So, I was just wondering why so many are, well... A$$'s online... I know here, its.. neglegable as most users are computer geeks with IT jobs (and therefore more aware of courtesy online). But a majority of people are very rude, and unkind about real topics. I dont want anyone to say its all "teenagers" as, it isnt.. its a primary core of people between 18-30's (I said 18 I know... I just dont have time, nor patience.. nor...sleep to function at my normal peak to explain it)

Get on any youtube video and you'll see people just bash the heck out of someone/video. Its so uncalled for. If your going to talk online, at least have the same courtesy as if you were actually talking to them face to face. It just bugs me people are so rude and unkind to people they have never met. A disturbing trend? Or is the internet to big for "real" communication? Post it on the fourms below! (hehe... had to steal that one from bit-tech, dont sue me!)

I agree that there are a lot of pricks online, I sometimes go to the mazda3 forums to get advice on my car. but I don't bother posting. anyone who posts without first searching and becoming an expert on the subject that they want to ask about, just gets insulted and told to go look up the answer on their own.
But on the other hand, you do find some people who don't mind taking the time to try and help. What I really hate is when someone trys to help someone and the person asking for the help turns out to be a real *****.
The worst part about the internet is that you can say and do whatever you want. whats the worst thing that can happen? you get banned from a forum site. big deal, make another account. If people had to face real world consequences for their actions, I think the Internet would be a different place.

Internet + Anonymity = Total Douchebag

There's a cartoon for that equation somewhere, but it's hard to find.

You get idiots in real life, but you avoid them (chavs) so just ignore them on the internet. Unless it's Bindi.

    There's two seperate phenomona imo.

Firstly, there's the net-savvy hate-groups. The *chans are a prime example. They spew raw unfiltered hatred at any target their collective mind chooses, simply because they can and it's funny to them. That's the reason they do it, because it's 5-10 minutes of entertainment, and then on to the next target.

Then there's the second group, the internet + anon = ******s group. This lot just think that because they're on the net everyone should be super nice to them, no-one should ever claim they're wrong, and any time anyone does, they have the right to SHOUT and swear at them because no-one can really do anything about it.

It's all about finding the right community, sometimes a great community will have a little of the first but none of the second. More often, a mediocre community will have lots of the second and none of the first.

That happens on any large forum. This forum is pretty small so it doesn't get too bad, but there are plenty of forums where the same basic 5-10 questions are repeated ad infinitum by annoying noobs who havn't bothered to take the time to search for answers. Searching before posting a thread is an absolute must, it's extremely poor form not to, and not doing so makes you the asshole. Likewise, not googling or seeing if you can find out the answer to your question on your own is also poor. Most people on the net these days ignore etiquette completely and post without searching the forum or wider net for an answer, but they are the assholes, not the ones who angrily reply when they do so.

I have friends who insist on talking like idiots on msn. "Hi m8 fncy cumin fr drnks n sat? gonna b cool!"

They get annoyed when I block them!

I don't even like lol. If you think something is funny, it's haha - the noise most of us make when we actually do laugh. Anyone who actually brings that kinda **** into the real world with them will get the full attention of my greatest talent. Completely ignoring you!

In fact, I actually might think less of a person if they can't write (or at least attempt - bad spelling is acceptable if the person is at least attempting to do the right thing) properly.

My g/f would have to use <gurning> <gurning> <gurning> SNORT! <gurning>. She doesn't make a "ha ha" noise unless she's being sarcastic.

In her case, lol is acceptable.

Text speak in general is awful. It's not that difficlut to use spelling, grammar and punctuation, is it kids? Unfortunately, most (not all) teenagers come home from school without having learned a single thing, most don't want to, either.
The only internet word I use regularly is "N00b" (with the zeroes) and that's only at work when one of the team does something stupid.

    Quality. :D

Bit like the Rev. Phelps family...

Welcome to the majority of humanity. :sigh: Often it doesn't even take anonymity, or alcohol.

I dont agree with that, sure I know how to search for something, but some people dont. Some people are as you put it, noobs. and I really think that if someone asks a question that has already been asked, it makes more sense to answer the question anyway, or point the person in the right direction so that they know where to look.
I know that will never happen, but it would be nice.

Yep there's alot of asshats online. It's one reason why most MMOGs fail. The developers create these lush, wonderful, open ended onlines games for people to interact, then see their creations flooded with degenerates. This is why there are soo many single players in MMOG.

In the school I work in we were forced to give the kids email accounts. We use VNC to assist, monitor, et al. It's depressing to see entire classrooms of kids using the system to text message each other. More depressing when they type in normal English, realise, delete then write the sentence again in text.

You'll have to put up with this for generations to come.

It happens all the time on more mature forums.

Someone posts a very common question, non-noobs come in and tell them that they should search the forum, or google it. If they follow the instructions they will find the answer they were looking for, and they will learn that they should try googling and searching forums, before asking needless questions.

Often though, they don't. They just whine that no-ones prepared to help them. People (and by this I mean regular people {and by this I mean assholes}), forget that techie enthusiasts don't sit on the net, just waiting for a simple question they've answered 300 times already that week to pop up so they can answer it. They have lives*, they want to themselves get stuck into interesting stuff. If they answer questions it's out of the goodness of their heart, and people expecting that the internet should spoon feed them every little thing they want to know, simply because some people on it are prepared to help others who actually try to help themselves, is annoying and ruins forums.

    *well, lives online....

Nah, the internet hate groups are far funnier than that. They pick targets far more arbitrarily, are so vicious that phelps looks like a friendly bonobo, and lose attention in any one thing at a rate that is ridiculously comical.

Anyway, someone today, in real life (that is, AFK), suggested to me that his chemistry teacher wouldn't have been a problem if hitler had waited before invading lithuania, succeeded in the war, and enforced his eugenics program. Proof that assholes exist in in both real, and tube based life.

Bit-tech and the VW forum I visit are the only two places I post online anymore. In my experiences the communities else where are just horrible and everyone is a no-it-all expert or certified asshole and do it just for the entertainment. And to take this a step further, I've had to resort to basically shutting out everyone else on the internet. I don't instant message at all anymore, I only visit IRC Channels briefly for specific things, and for services like Xbox Live, I've set my privacy options to mute everyone but my friend's list automatically. I have to agree that the Internet is perhaps too big for real communication due to the anonymous factor involved. Out of sight, out of mind is basically the way it works on the net when it comes to communications of any form.

You're right, but I've seen that mentality taken too far. There is one forum I visit very occasionally which is particularly bad - they don't just tell you to search when you ask the incredibly simple questions. They yell at you to search even when you ask fairly unusual or complex problems - essentially, if they can recall ever having answered the question or seeing a similar thread, they tell you to search.

They don't even use common sense about it. I've asked a question on that forum regarding a function I was unfamiliar with - I could describe it, but didn't know what it was called or how it was used. Not knowing the name, my searching didn't get me any results, so I went ahead and posted, pointing out that I had tried searching. The dozen or so people to respond all flamed me, amazed that I hadn't been able to find it in my searching. They knew what the function was, so they searched for it by name and got numerous results. It took them longer to flame me than it would have to post the one-word name and leave, thus solving both of our problems.

However, that's not the worst of it. A while back, I was looking for a bit of help, and started out with the search. No problem; my answer was found in the second result. However, the first result was very nearly the most infuriating thing I've ever seen on the internet. Someone had posted this exact same question, and of course been told to use the search. Then, some kind soul had actually answered the question...only to have a moderator come in and delete the answer. This wasn't people being fed up with answering the same question too many times; someone obviously didn't mind answering it. The community was so obsessed about using the search function that they actually would not allow the answer to be posted again.

I am also incapable of reading the comments on Digg and on YouTube videos.
