You've never been cut off on the highway? Happens to me on a near-daily basis, I barely ever bother switching lanes now, and people still manage to merge onto me.

You start to merge with your indicator and some dick decides he wants to merge too, without indicator, and just twists his wheel and speeds into the spot you were going to before you complete your merge, forcing you to merge back immediately.

Except the guy then kept merging into my friend's lane, and he was going slower, so he had to hit the brakes, and I guess he panicked or twisted the wheel by reflex and lost it.

But I saw the rear kick to the right right as he slammed himself back into the lane, brake lights came on, violently jerked to the right and then the left and swing out before spinning and going into the grass rear-first.

Ya i don't even stay in the merge lane anymore when i am on the highway which is everyday to work. Some people just dont understand how merging works they like to just merge when there doing like 20 under what you are. So you have to slam on the brakes and hope you dont crash. Then you go to merge and some asshole wont let you i slow down and they slow down its just a pain in the ass.

Can we just have robots drive cars already

a car without anti-lock brakes? That almost equals suicide in case of an accident..

How to brake properly? It forces you to appreciate the limits of the car and teaches you how to feel to the edge of the grip available, rather than just going '****' and stomping the pedal to the floor.

Picarro, your statement makes no sense. In an accident you're already screwed, whether or not the brakes are going, because you're already out of control and no amount of braking is going to help because you're well beyond the tyres already. Okay, like the OP's friend, you might be able to make small adjustments, but you're already in the deep end and ABS or no, you're going to hit hard.

Okay, I wasn't clear enough. If you are doing 100 km/h = 60 mp/h, your stopping distance is around 80 meters with ABS brakes, but if your brakes lock up, you are screwed. Your stopping distance would be closer to the 120 mark. And 40 meters is A LOT of velocity that has to be transferred to whatever semi-solid object you might hit.

Therefore, ABS brakes are gonna save you in case of an accident.

How can a test that awards 3/35 points for just having seat belt reminders be any good? The EURO NCAP test is okay up to a certain point, but Volvo has always been on the forefront of safety. They were the first to implement seatbelts, they have the best crash statistics, and they are currently implementing next-gen safety features like automatic braking.

On my island we don't have highways, we have high speed roads that go up to 100km/h and have 2 lanes, one for driving and one for overtaking the driver in front of you.

question: The person that cuts you off is the person in front of your or behind you?

If you want to learn how to handle a car in an emergency i suggest getting an old rear wheel drive car, and finding a huge parking lot with snow/ice. On older cars you will be able to feel what the front wheels are doing when you start to loose traction.

This should (In my opinion) be done every time you get a new car. Learning how the car feels and behaves in extreme conditions could save your life one day.

    It's also great fun. :)

Actually, when is come to safety technology Mercedes seems to be on "the top" at the moment. Under-car airbags, seats and seat belts that adjusts before impact, to name a couple of things. I'm not sure if any of these technologies have gotten to production yet.

Good to know that I'm not the only one that see this almost every day...

Damn, that was a nice car, didn't like the headlight eyebrows, but that's about it.

Agreed with Smilodon, mercs are crazy safe. I think its the current C class, that will change the position of the seats on impact and as Smilodon said adjusts the seat belts. So you are in the safest position. Also unlocks the door so the emergency services can get you out etc.

I wondered if i impacted a wall at X speed to what height would that translate, opened up excel, put H=(v^2)/(2*g) (from potential E=mgh and kinetic E=1/2m*v^2) and obtained the next:

I tested a 2009 E-class a couple months ago. One of the most impressive things about this car was the brakes. The were very nice and smooth, but when you stomp on the pedal it almost feels like you are hitting a wall. I'm not sure why it stops so fast, but I suspect that is have some kind of active suspension.

There's a lot of different variations, of course, but the basic cutoff requires three lanes traveling in the same direction.

We're in the yellow car in the right-hand (slow) lane, behind a semi truck. He's going rather slow, so we're waiting for a break in the center lane so we can overtake. Seeing an opening, we signal and start to change lanes...

And the red car decides he wants to be in the center lane, so he pulls directly into the spot we were entering. We have to go back into the right-hand lane to avoid an accident. Cue yelling, suggestive hand gestures, etcetera. We've just been cut off.

DarkLord7854's friend had the situation go from bad to worse - rather than just taking the center lane and staying there, the red car was going for the right-hand lane, and started to move in on top of him...

He hit the brakes, lost control, and left the road. The driver of the red car may not have even noticed what happened.

Agressive/blind drivers suck. I bicycle a lot, and I'm constantly amazed at how many people do utterly stupid things because they don't think about me.

Without ABS I will stop in a shorter distance, I actually have a feel for the road that is impossible to emulate with a computer, so I can be back on the brakes before the computer can. The point of ABS is to allow drivers who don't know what they are doing to jam on the brakes without skidding so they can take evasive action. I used to gokart and know how to cadence brake ;) I will be fine.

Also, I am getting an old volvo. Rwd, no assists of any sort. Just me, 3 pedals and a wheel.

Techno, that is an awesome illustration. +rep

Why thank you very much. I had sort of assumed something like that, but that illustration was great.

Same thing happened to me going on Alton towers ages ago. I narrowly avoided what would have been quite a pile up. The reason I was moving over was because an Audi behind me was so far up my arse I am pretty sure he could have changed the radio station.
As I pulled over he went to go around me before I had even changed lanes fully. Good job he had some sense to see the other guy about to pull into me from the left-most lane, so held back. And I moved back into lane safely.

I can only imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been able to go back... would have been nasty.

Epic illustration. That's basically what happened, it's a 6 lane highway (6 lanes each side).

    (+rep given)
