    Hi all,

I used to use these forums a while back, seems a lot has changed; had to re-register.

Anyway, I've got an Asus Maximum Formula motherboard and an Enermax Infiniti PSU. Until recently all was fine. However, a couple of months ago I had a problem with the CPU fan intermittently failing. During this time on one occasion the PC failed to power on properly.

I turned the power on at the mains socket and then switched on the pc, for a split second it started to power up then powered down and the PSU kept 'beeping'. The light on the back of the PSU went from green to solid red. I switched it off and again and tried about 30mins later and everything was fine. In the mean time I changed I replaced the CPU fan.

Last week however, the same thing happened again, and again I tried leaving it off for a while, but still on several occasions I haven't been able to get it powered up. According to the PSU manual it has a 'PowerGuard' function where if it thinks there's something wrong it cuts the power.

The table in the manual for this state is suggests the following:

Suddenly off or unable to power on:

    1. Power supply abnormal, protection circuit activated.
    2. Connector terminals are short-circuited

    On

    1. PG (Power Good) signal abnormal
    2. System loading lower than PSU minimum output load requirment

The first thing that confuses me is that I can't tell what it means by PSU on or off. The PSU almost tries to power on then the beeper starts sounding (all happens in less than a second) then if you listen carefully you can hear buzzing sound from the PSU and fans are not moving.

I'm really stuck for what to do now as I don't know if the problem is with PSU. motherboard or even the CPU. I think the warrenty is most definitely over as components were purchased begining of 2008. The spec is:

    Asus Maximum Formula motherboard
    Quad Core 2.4 @ 3.51
    8GB DDR2 1066
    Gainward Bliss 8800GT 1GB
    Creative X-Fi fatality
    DVD writer
    7 HDD's (ranging from 300GB-2TB)
And the usual USB powered deviced (mouse, keyboard, wifi etc.

I've tried swapping out the RAM and swapping out the CPU fan, disconnected all USB devices, unplugged some of the hard drives and even reset the CMOS using the reset switch on the back of the motherboard.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

On the computer case, do Power, reset, reset, power, all done in a row with no wait. Does your computer power up now? (little rick which sometimes works on broken PSU).

I believe your problem is that your PSU has a manufacture error, and should be called for repair/replacement under warranty (RMA).

Thanks for the reply. I've just had this message back (finally) from the Enermax:

I will try your little method before I go out and buy another PSU though. I can't afford any purchases at the moment, too many bills. I don't need to turn the heating on in that room as the computer heats it up enough. It's always rendering movies, 3D animations etc or other stuff so it's generally on 24/7.
