Hey Guys! I have a friend who is looking to sell me two Asus GeForce 260 GTX cards for £100! is it worth to buy them or do you think it would be better to keep the money and spend them on an alternative card for the same money?? I believe that they are now redundant by Nvidia's standards but do they still pack a punch? for example how would they fare with the new Deus Ex game?? Looking to set up a rig using a intel i5 2500k 4 gb ddr 1800 RAM, Any info would be a appreciated! SM
It'd be better to buy a single brand new card. Like an Asus 1GB GeForce GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II for an extra £75... http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-asus-gtx-560-ti-directcu-ii-4000mhz-gddr5-gpu-830mhz-384-core The GTX260 is geting on, you don't know what mileage they've had and also dealing with an SLI rig can be a pain to get the cooling just right! Treat the i5 to something special
£50 a card is about what 260's are worth now, so you'd be paying market rate rather than getting a fantastic deal. I'm sure they would be fine for the next Deus Ex game, but as it has been said, you'll need a beefy (700W) PSU and be creating a lot of extra heat and noise. Not only that but SLI will only even work in situations where SLI is enabled in the Nvidia drivers, and in situations where it is not, you'll be relying on a single, not very powerful, card.
I don't remember how well the 260s scale in SLI, but Blogins makes a good point about their mileage. Also, can your PSU handle them in SLI? If the cost of a 560Ti is out of reach, the non-Ti 560 can be had for £140. I'll wager a 1GB 460, which can be had for a little over £100, would compete with SLI 260s. Fine, if you already have a 260 and can pick up a 2nd for peanuts, then it makes a bit more sense; but, starting out by buying two? In short, I wouldn't touch them.
Very well - best SLI setup I ever had. Provided SLI scales as well as it can (+90% or so) it should beat a GTX460 quite easily...but to have SLI scaling that good in every game is indeed wishful thinking. I got it purely for Crysis a couple of years ago and my fps jumped from 22 to 40. @ OP, definitely go for a single card like a GTX460; it may not be as good as the SLI setup "could" be, but it's a better buy (DX11 for a start).
Hey thanks so much for the advice guys! i think il end up going towards the 460 maybe 560 route! Should hopefully pick something up at trade price! Unless i can get them both for 50quid might be a nice way to start out! Guess if you don't ask then you don't get!
