Hi, I was about to go ahead and order my parts for the new build but then had a change of heart regarding the cpu cooler...My main concern is effective cooling without being ludicrously noisy, and though I won't be overclocking (on a 980 x), I don't want to use the intel reference cooler as it's apparantly quite noisy. I was going to go for a Thermaltake Frio but now I'm thinking of the Titan Fenrir Evo not least as it's had good reviews and seems v easy to fit. My other main concern is the size of these coolers - I'm planning on shoving in 12 GB (3x4GB) ram and would like the ram slots to not be obstructed for future upgrade options.. So to any Asus P6X58D-E owners - what coolers are you using on your yours? Thanks, Q.
Why not consider the Corsair H70 or the H50(slightly cheaper) at least then you will get better cooling on your CPU and it does not stick out obscuring RAM slots. You can youtube it as well to see how nicely they fit into other peoples builds. I was considering fans myself when i first started looking into builds but was put off by 1. The fact most stick out over ram slots and two the huge amount of weight and stress put on your board over time. So i am going for the much more board/room friendly corsair H70 range.
Water. Nuff said. Before that, I was on an Akasa Nero. Seemed to do the job on a C0 i7 - certainly at stock, a little noisier at full pelt. If you're staying at stock speeds, there's no need to go huge for the cooler. If you think you'll overclock in the future, buy big - you're going for Fenrir, Frio, Megahalems, or preferably, a low-cost water-based solution (aka Corsair H50/H70) for less noise. Switching to a quiet cooler fan (Scythe Gentle Typhoon seems to be the consensus around here) would make all the difference.
Cheers law, Yup, the Corsair stuff had crossed my mind but I've never installed anything like that before and have an unfounded fear of water cooling! My only other two builds have Freezer 7 coolers in and I remember thinking they were massive and heavy...not sure how much the Fenrir weighs but it is a bit of a concern having a lump of metal hanging over your board. That said, the fittings look pretty secure and the old Freezer 7's had those dodgy push pins..
Thanks Maverick - I've just been looking at two many cooler reviews - I don't know my arse from my elbow now.
If your not overclocking then dont bother with water cooling. If you want to go just air get a thermalright 120 ultra extreme it wont block any ram slots and is probably the best air cooler there is. Go for a Corsair H70 you will still be able to overclock with it if you want.
The freezer 7 is small compared to the likes of the Titan, although the larger HSF's use a back plat and are more secure. Here is my two cents: If you want a quite HSF look at the geild tranquillo or the more expensive cogage Arrow (Coggare Arrow being better) If its unlimited proformance look at the Thermaltake Frio or what i personally would be going for the Crosair H50/H70 as it combines both. The H50/H70 is a closed water cooling loop so you have nothing to worry about.
So did i hence i 'youtubed it' and had a look at how they work and was pretty re-assured and the thing is they are no harder to install than a fan, fit the brackets, stick it on and screw it in/connect the power and in a years time if you want to OC to get more performance out of your CPU, you wont have to worry about buying something else as its there to cope with it, as another has stated they are a closed looped system and sealed so unless you start bending the pipes in unusal ways it should not spring any links, its not like other custom watercooling units which you build and seal yourself. When you get it, you can hook it up to your PSU outside of your case prior to any install anyhow and run it for a few minutes to make sure it has none - before installing in case the courier was rough with it.
Thanks chaps - I have last month's Custom PC and have been reading through their big round up, but it's a little too aimed at the hardcore overclocker really but really appreciate your advice. Just had a look on youtube regarding the H50 installation and is actually pretty straightforward - Still though - water+electronics...arghh. I guess these things are pretty safe though...whats the failure rate of `closed loops`? I'm assumung as there closed, then no maintenance is needed? Thanks again to all for the replies..
None that i have heard off as its a closed loop no maintenance is needed other than removing dust from the fan now and then.. As for fails..once again try googling it there are a few stories out there but you have to ask how many of these are from "user abuse/bad installs/bending of loops" if it had alot of general fails quality wise there would be alot of bad press for it...and little recommendations. Nothing at the end of the day is 100% safe, even cooling fans can fail without users knowing it till they either get high temp warnings or smells of burning
..and they say the Tranquillo is the smallest (of the group test)..whether or not that STILL covers a ram slot though is another issue..? From what I can see, the Fenrir Evo is v easy to install which is a plus with again the possible issue of ram coverage.. I'd like a cooler that wasn't some kind of Krypton factor IQ test to install but as I'll have the motherboard out at the start anyway it's not such a biggy. I guess at the end of the day, whatever I put in to cool a 980 is going to be fairly hefty (on air that is). Q.
Yup - seems like the H50 is going down rather nicely. Lots of good reviews over at overclockers.co.uk. Q.
Indeed.. so are any of you using this Motherboard? Any other people have air cooling suggestions for this specific board regarding ram clearance...? thanks Q.
This is nuts lol, how many even have the board The frio with 1 fan installed is silent and doesn't cover any memory slots on this board ( you will get around 35c idle 60-70c load ) at stock settings. If you do install the 2nd fan your ram needs to be under 5-7cm to fit under it which is a pretty decent amount of room. ( most ram is 4cm with heatspreaders ) As for install frio in a well built case is a relatively painless install the fan is the biggest issue to get on and I personally used some long length screws I had spare. Phantom is pretty decent case if noise is a concern even on high the fans arnt really loud on low it's silent
That's what I was after! Cheers...yup the clearance is good to know as I wasn't sure about the Dominator ram heatsinks.. I'm not overly worried about some noise - just not a roaring fan. It's a shame about the stock cooler on this cpu as its half decent (at stock) from what I gather - just a bit noisy. I was going to shove all this into a Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced Dominator case... thanks again Rollo.
Thanks again all - have just ordered all my parts and ended up going with the (relatively) small and quiet Tranquillo which will be fine for my needs... Cheers Q.
