I would strongly suggest you're in for a wait for the 700 Series so bare that in mind. The sample we showed off was one of only 3 existing models; it was a tech demo to give you a hint of the year ahead. The 101's a good price now though!
Thanks for the tidbits Edwards. I rarely use Bluetooth, but i hope mine doesn't have the issues you've mentioned. I keep watching courier vans park up outside, but nothing for me thus yet. Sam
So my Prime should arrive this week. I've bought in preparation a 16GB Micro SDHC card, and a Neoprene Sleeve for it. Anyone have any experience with any of the ebook app's that are available? I like the Kindle app, but i don't want to start buying books for it, only to find that it doesn't work too well on a larger screen than my Desire HD. Cheers, Sam
I use kindle app on my Xoom. Have bought a few books on it now. Novels and technical books for work. It's good. You could try reading a free book on there to see if it suits you.
I have both the desire hd and the prime, and think that ebooks look a lot better on the tablet, using the kindle app. Also, note that you can load ebooks into the kindle app without having to buy them from amazon, you just put them in the kindle folder and restart the prime. Honestly i think the deisre hd is too small to read from for extended periods.
Thanks again for the rapid responses. What i meant, as i don't think i explained very well (nothing new there) I know the Kindle App works on the Desire HD, but i don't know if it's optimised for the larger screen of the Tablets. Sam
@Tim or Richard, can either of you comment on stock availability in the UK? I gave JL a call this evening to find out any info of when mine could be arriving, and i've been told there's no stock at the suppliers till Feb 20th at the earliest. Checked both Amazon and Ebuyer, and neither have any in stock either. Thanks, Sam
Hi Sam, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - I had to speak with the local team to get to the bottom of the situation as I tend not to be directly involved in UK-only situations. Significant amounts of stock is arriving in the UK all the time (as is the case in other regions as well), but at the moment it is all fulfilling backorder volume. The local office currently recommends contacting its preferred retailers which include PC World, Currys, Comet, John Lewis, Carphone Warehouse, Amazon UK and Ebuyer. I hope this helps! Tim
Hello Tim, And Thank You for the response. Yes, John Lewis called me yesterday regarding my order, and whether i was to keep or cancel my order, Which i've decided to keep. When i was told about the 1 month delay, i did somewhat suspect either a slow down of stock entering the UK, or if it was fulfilling the back orders. Thank you for clarifying it though, Hopefully they will clear the backlog quicker than expected and the Prime will arrive earlier than the 20th. Sam
So i had a play on a Transformer today, first time i've had a go, and was very impressed. Heavier than i thought, but that i think was done to the bulk holding it to the counter, Still impressive though. Also had a play on some of the other Android tabs, out of those, the Galaxy Tab impressed me too. Still looking forward to receiving the Prime. Sam
Supposed to be having a "trial unit" dropped off to me at work tomorrow by an Asus employee. We are looking at that along with iPad2 and Samsung Galaxy 10.1. So far out of iPad and Samsung the Samsung wins easily. What I think might be the problem with the Asus is no sim slot - fancy making a mobile tablet with no sim slot Anyway we need around 25-30 of whatever we decide on so be interesting to see how the Asus measures up.
OK, the Asus has arrived and the guy who is testing it reports out of that, the iPad2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab it is the best one for us however the lack of sim slot is a real problem. I seem to recall reading that Asus were going to launch a revised model later in the year with a sim slot - is this true?
Well reply from Asus seems to be that they have no intention of making their Prime with a Sim slot all we can do is "tether it" to a mobile phone. So we won't bother - we'll just go and get the Samsung Galaxy instead which has a sim slot. No idea who designed the Asus but no Sim slot is a complete fail - shame since it is a really good device.
I'm still waiting for my Tf201 to arrive, shouldn't be too long i hope, but i will be calling John Lewis tomorrow, see if it's going to be sooner or later than the 20th. John, the problem with a having a Sim in the tablet means you need a 2nd Contract, which is just another monthly expense, while phone tethering isn't. When i had my iPad, i thought great, mobile browsing on the move with a big screen, what i hadn't considered were the £60+ phone bills each month. Sam
I would say 'no intention' is a bit harsh, since it's well known that we planned 3G versions of the original Transformers even. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes with carriers and regulatory bodies we cannot discuss. It's really far more complicated than just designing a SIM slot.
Well we went and got the Samsungs. We need them for our sales reps out on the road hence we wanted a tablet with a sim slot so they don't have to ar*e around at the customers shop/restaurant tethering it to a mobile which to be blunt looks naff. As for Sim we went with Three as they do a "data only" sim for £13/month which is fine for what we need.
It's on it's way, at last, Should be here tomorrow, all i know though, is between 9am and 6pm, but that's better than knowing nothing. Sam
