    Hi,
I just read your article on the XFX 6800 Ultra, well done.

I have purchased an ASUS V9999 Ultra but have an issue regarding installation.
I have posted this on a few boards with no avail, I was hoping you guys could offer some insight.

    These are mys system specs,

    Windows XP - SP1
    Intel P4 - 3.0GHz (800FSB)
    Abit IC7-MAX 3 mobo
    1 GB of Mushkin PC3500 cas2
    ASUS V9999 6800 Ultra
    Audigy 2 ZS
Twin 74 GB Western Digital Raptors in RAID 0
80 GB Seagate (also SATA - backups)
    Antec 550W True Power PSU
    Sony G520 21'' monitor
    Lite-On DVD-RW (money ran out...)

    My problem,

When I installed my video card, I received a "CODE 12" from the device manager.
This states that this device has not found enough resources to use and that I should turn off other devices to free up some resources.
It knows that it is an ASUS Ultra card (I used the most recent drivers) but this seems to be a resource allocation issue.

Now my mobo comes chock full of extras, some I dont use. So I turned off what I know I dont use in the bios...
Turned off one of the two onboard SATA controllers (I only use one)
Turned off the onboard audio, IEEE 1394 firewire, USB 2.0 controller
Also turned off one IDE channel (only use one for the optical drive)

    But still no joy.

Looking at the device manager, this doesn't appear to be an IRQ conflict, I'm guessing it is the 32bit memory mapping allocation.
But hey, what would I know - has anybody ever come across this problem before?

I have taken out the Ultra and put my Ti-4200 back in so I can actually use my PC (for work :)
Any help, assistance or clue you could offer would be a tremendous help.
Purchasing a $1000 video card that only displays 640 x 480, 4 bit colour is almost a crime.

I have read loads of discussion boards, yet haven't seen anyone with this card / mobo combo or even this issue....
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hoping you can help,
    Baldric

    Guys,

Thanks for posting, I have tried that (re-install) but still no joy.
I have also contacted ASUS and ABIT to see if any other reported cases.

I have not tried the card in another machine yet, nor another 6800 ultra in this one
(since I have neither another machine nor a spare 6800 ultra).

Uni exams are *almost* over so that I can then spend more time trying to resolve this issue, in a way it is a blessing.

Fast card + games = no study....

But if anyone has any clues about my particular hardware configuration or the mysterious Microsoft code 12, I'd love to hear them.

    Thanks for your ideas though...

Yep, removing/swapping slots on the soundcard should be your first port of call, but if that doesn't work (and I'm not sure it will) then can you try the card in someone else's machine?

Did you clear the CMOS? If not, try it.

    Thanks for the posts...

    Guys,

No, I haven't tried swapping the PCI slot the soundcard is in.
And although this may work (I will try it) it is a pretty sad limitation to think that out of the 5 PCI slots available,
just that one causes the dreaded "Code 12".

I only have the single PCI card, what if someone had multiple expansion cards in there?

I'll try swapping slots and let you guys know..

As far as the CMOS question, I'm assuming you mean on the mobo.
I have flashed it with the latest bios (which requires clearing the CMOS)
    Still no luck....

    Cheers,
    Baldric

creative cards tend to be a bit bitchy - not all cards will cause this error plugged into the same slot. but tbh who's going to need more than 2-3 slots anyway?
