So I just orderd a 5850 from Overclockers for a very good price but I suspect my PSU may not be up to the challange but comparing power consuption of my current card and the 5850 they seem to be relatively the same.

    What do you guys think?

The PSU is the now discontinued Corsair CX400 btw.

I say you should get away with it. It not like you have a 990X overclocked.

Like fingers has shown, you'll be fine.

    I've seen a GTX480 running off a 450w PSU, so a 5850 will be no issue for a 400w.

Thanks for clarification guys, in the coming months I may buy a better, modular PSU

    I have a 955BE + HD 6950 + 48W Fan running off of a VX450 and it is enough. I should guess your 555BE + 5850 should be ok on the CX400

I would definitely recommend trying to unlock your Phenom II X2 550 if not already done so, and overclock it as well. Even my Q6600 at 3.6GHz would bottleneck my overclocked 5850 a bit...in games that are slightly more CPU demanding and don't use more than two cores.

I've tried to unlock the CPU but the other two cores are defunct. I will probably overclock over what I already have, its at 3.4GHz right now.

It doesn't really matter what the PSU's Watt rating is but how many Amps you got on your 12v rails. Your PSU has a single 30A 12v rail and a 5850 needs 13A (155w) at load. So you should be alright. Still would be an idea to upgrade when you can though.
