This seems to be a common problem, but I haven't seen a satisfactory answer for it.

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy from the live CD and can't get my video card to work properly. If I boot from the live CD with "safe display drivers" it works fine, but when I installed it from there it gets to the splash screen and then my monitor stops getting signal. How do I either change my installation or get it to re-install with the safe drivers?

Hardware is an ATI AIW 8500 DV. I don't care about the TV in features, I just want the video to work.

You could try running a live cd that works, mount the / harddrive, copy over the xorg.conf and reboot?

Boot to command line then install the closed ati drivers.

i ran into the same issue with my X1900XT with ubuntu, freebsd, fedora core. About the only one what seemed to be have was suse. In the end i went back to windows so save my sanity for a little while. I would try the live cd route thats been mentioned. If that doesn't work i would try loading suse and see how that goes.

If you read the forum guides it takes only a few minits to get ati cards working.
