I do alot of 3D modelling and i want to be able to use openGL but my X1800XL doesnt seem to like it, when ever i switch to an opengl realtime render in Truespace 5.1 i get a blank screen, desktop is still there and the truespace window is too but there is no image of my model.

My mobo (Lanparty Ultra D) has two 16x pci-e slots so i'm wondering if i can get a Nvidia graphics card and put it in the other slot to get the benifit of nvidia's opengl support? I know i'd have to plug the monitor back into the X1800XL each time i wanted to play games but since thats not often atm it doesnt bother me.

Has anyone done something similar? any foreseeable problems?

I've never heard of that being done, but theoretically, it should work just fine.

Getting the drivers to coexist peacefully will be an issue.

Yeah thats what i thought, that and making sure that truespace uses the right card/drivers/output.

If you don't game that often? Why not sell your X1800XL and buy something like a 7900GTX? That saves you the hassle of switching cards every time, and still offers good ingame performance?

NVidia and ATI will coexist fine... although there may be some quirks to get around. For example which card a 3d aplication is going to use.

    not really.

just make 2 hardware profiles in windows

    profile1: enable nvidia disable ati
    profile2: enable ati diable nvidia

just select the profile that you want depending on the VC. :D

it should work. although 2 high end cards will eat up ALOT of juice.

Not going to sell the X1800XL because i like the picture quality (plus i'm a bit biased towards ati). Power consumption wont be a problem either because ill get a very low end geforce (a 7300 probably since i wont be gaming it wont matter) and i have a hiper 580w psu.

    Does win2k do hardware profiles?

This is never EVER going to work, there is no incentive on either side to write the drivers, Crossfire uses DVI as a transfer medium while SLi uses pci-e, I dont think geforce cards can even take information in through the DVI interface.

I am aware that it won't work...I meant I hope that the 2 GPU will work on the same board.

it should, i think the setting is somewhere in advanced system settings or something like that.

Just do a google search for hardware profiles and win2k.

in xp (it should be similar) under the hardware tab in system properties there is a button called hardware profile that should be it.

    Update:

Since reinstalling windows along with all my other programs and a different catalyst version, my X1800XL is playing fair with openGL so i wont be trying this, not until i need more than two monitors anyway.

    Thanks for the feedback anyway
