I don't know whether this has been done before but I wanna see what peoples' personal preference is for their GPU. The two high end graphics cards from these manufacturers are the nVidia 8800GTX and the ATI HD 2900XT. So I wanna know who you go with and why.

Personally, I have an ATI at the moment and when I build my new rig ... I thought I was going with the 8800GTX but a friend persuaded me to go for the cheaper ATI HD 2900XT (1GB version) I want to give ATI another chance.

i had some many graphic cards during the past 12 years or so , ATI and NVIDIA where 40% to 60% or 50% - 50% i've lost my count . But i do prefer the NVIDIA , better OpenGL Driver , better drivers from my experience . An currently in love with my G80 ;]

nVidia. The ATi cards at the moment are not as good, because they aren't so good at the AA. The top end nVidia *should* outperform the ATi equivalent. Though personally, I wouldn't buy either and wait for the 2nd gen DX10 cards to come out ^^

Good driver support, and multi screen support, with the nvidia drivers and multiple screen you need not have to run ultramon program as most features are in the drivers.

I've actually had lots of issues trying to make my desktop extend to a TV using the nVidia drivers where as with my old x850xt and the ATI drivers there were no problems. At the current moment nVidia definitely has the performance lead, but for the value card segment the x1950xt seems to have great price to performance at the moment, as does the x1950pro. So I guess I can't really say one is better then the other, it just depends on how much you have to spend and what you need drivers to do.

In terms of raw power, I'll say nVidia, however, because of all the issues with vista drivers for nVidia, I'm going to go with ATi on the driver front.

I've had nothing but driver issues with the nVidia card I used. I switched back to ATI, not a problem since.

Try using your ATI card on Linux. If ATI can't be arsed to make decent working Linux drivers, I can't be arsed to buy their cards. And you can generalise that, ATI has next to none Linux support, nVidia has OK-ish support. Take an example from Intel AMD, allmost all their chips (including IGPs) have opensource drivers...

But that's the thing, you wouldn't use an ATI card on Linux if you know the drivers are crap. You do what you need at the end of the day.

In terms of drivers I don't know, but I do know the 8800 series outperform the 2900 series.

Have never used nVidia and would hate to start. However, it looks like my new laptop will only ship with a GeForce. Sh*t.

    But it doesn't count:D

Now, I allways like a good facts based opinion... Not like you don't have a reason to hate nVidia. Good thing that fanboys are allways so obvious...

As another worshipper of the Great Penguin, I'm going to have to side with Glider & Supertoad.

If ATi can't produce decent Linux drivers, I can't be bothered to buy their products.

NVidia - However there Vista drivers lack features like custom resolutions. I have ATI cards at work, and I have had problems with the video drivers crashing and had to rebuild.

I can't blame you for misinterpreting my reply. It looks like the edit didn't save when the forums were having a heart attack and timing out, but what I edited in was that I've been using ATi components since their Rage family in the 90s, including, but not limited to, nearly every piece of the Rage 128 line. Evidently, I had no reason to start using an nVidia alternative when ATi solutions sufficed quite comfortably, and they continue to satisfy my needs today. Well, excuse me, but to start using an nVidia product now, after ten years, is a bit of a milestone for me.
