I always find it somewhat odd that there are fanboys in computer enthusiast circles. Your entire hobby is based on progress and change, but you go against that when you form opinions like these, which are basically an admission to a fear of change. If you can buy the best then you buy the best, if what the best is changes, you buy different next time. Just because one company does what you NEED doesn't mean that company does everything you WANT.

It all stems from brand loyalty though guitar - doesn't always matter if something's faster (although this gen of graphics cards is a rather stand-out issue as far as brand loyalty goes since nVidia has crushed AMDTi) - if someone has a good experience with a product, they'll be more likely to want one of theirs again. Rinse and repeat. Suddenly performance numbers don't mean enough, and people will compromise to stick with a brand.

I can tell I'm becoming more of an nVidia fan - before I bought this 7900GT, I had only ever really owned ATi cards, now I've had this I feel like the big green aren't the enemy anymore, and I'd never be wary about buying their products anymore. That's down to just one (albeit excellent) card too!

Guitar, believe me, I'm not a fanboy--incredibly insulting to you and I in a community such as this. I've simply enjoyed ATi products for the better part of my life, if that was not made clear enough in prior page. I'm not sure from where you are summoning up suggestion that I outright hate nVidia. Based on that past experience with said products, would it not be merited that I decided to continue using ATi products? Similarly, so what if I prefer Japanese cars over American offerings based on a good consumer experience?

Good point. however, I don't agree with it when graphics cards are concerned. If driver support is adequate, I buy the fastest card with the most OC headroom for the money. I had an excellent experience with the 6800GT. great card. Didn't stop me from buying the X1900XT the next time though.

To be honest it can be in any area of computing where there are definate, distinct brands - AMD and Intel for example, is a massive fanboy area, and has been for years. AMDTi and nVidia is another battleground where it's rife, if only because there are 2 competing brands in the public eye, you'll always end up with someone who hates 1 brand and loves the other.

Then again, there can be other areas where fanboyism is rare, if only because there are many many brands - look at RAM for example, that's an area where fanboyism is quite rare because so many companies come on and off the boil with the best kit, it's not even logical to stick with 1 brand permanently.

PSU's are a middle-ground somewhere, because when you get a good, solid PSU, you're likely to replace it with the same brand unless you know another type are better for sure. Not always easy to know.

Brand loyalty is slightly different to fanboyism tbh. I've had my fair share of both nvidia and ATI cards but the only one I've ever had fail on me was my last one around 2 months ago - which was nvidia. Naturally, my next card was ATI. I play my fair share of games, and I bought my card (2600XT) knowing that I could get better performance for not a lot more from nvidia, however what good is the worlds best card when it doesn't work?

Personally i'm very confused on this subject, especially as i'm building myself a new PC next week so need a new card :duh:

    Personal experience:
Nvidia: Used GF2-GF4 range. My GF4 4400 was the final straw after one day having to install no less than 5 different versions of the nvidia drivers to find one that worked with the new game i had... Also similar hassles with many different games.
Summed up: complete hassle with drivers.

ATI: used 9600 pro and my current x800 pro card. have yet to have a single windows driver issue ever with either of the cards, the few times the driver did crash the ATI VPU recover worked as advertised and carried on without breaking the running game. (though admittedly the linux drivers are dire :S)
Summed up: faultless windows drivers, but sucky linux ones

And now i have to choose a card for my new PC

I'm leaning towards the ATI 2900XT, as it's the approx price i was about to pay, with seemingly superior video decoding/features (do that a lot now) and my previous good experience with windows drivers...

But i really can't decide

On the contrary, brand loyalty is exactly what fanboyism is, just a more developed version. You've got it - you went for an inferior card because you had a bad(ish) experience with a card. :)

Well by the end of the month I will have ordered my new GPU and it will be an ATI. on paper the 2900XT 1GB is better than the 8800GTX but its the price difference im going for.

I'm more of a budget man these days. I want the best bang for my buck as they say

Nah, fanboyism is defending your preferred brand to the bitter end, failing to acknowledge that any other card could possibly be superior and that any problems people are reporting/bad press is always incorrect and biased. It tends to be based on little fact, if any at all, and forum posts contain irrational, illogical and frankly incorrect beliefs, over over emphasized with overzealous use of capital letters.

Then again, maybe you're right and I'm in denial ;) :p

*edit* my card isn't inferior - both the 8600 and 2600 suck :p

I know having brand loyalty and being a complete fanboy are different things, I'm saying one leads to the other, without question- I've seen it happen.

Think about it - if you have brand loyalty you're likely to think that brand is better, eventually you end up going to far that you say that brand is better, even without justification. :p

I tend to just go for whatever is best at the time.

    Past 4 or so years I've had;
    Radeon 9800
    Radeon x800
    GeForce 6800 GT
    GeForce GO 7800 GTX

And this time last year, I made the switch from AMD to Intel.
