    <rubs eyes sleepily>

Thanks Bindi, got up early for this!!

Edit: Well, I think I'll stick with my 6870 to be honest. The price difference is pretty huge compared to the performance gap.

from what I can tell, AMD needs more mature drivers, but still the GTX580 is a beast. AMD has a real fight on their hands again with Nvidia. I only wonder how next gen will play out.

A bit of an anticlimax, I guess. I suppose that was inevitable though - I have a feeling it'll be more interesting once the GPUs move to 32nm. (make that 28nm)

After the 6870, I was expecting far better numbers than this...

I guess the only thing for ATI to do is cut prices.

So after all the waiting a 570 is basically a better buy anyway.

Wow very surprising.....NOT if your in the know then you understand that AMD new scheme for the HD 6970 to be on par with the GTx 570 and the HD 6950 top have it's own tier. Once all eye candy is applied with 8x AA 16 AF then the HD 6970 really shines and does come closer to the GTX 580. Tessellation performance has been vastly improved and in the event Developers get real and start using Ray Tracing, the HD 5970 5870 6970 6950 all surpass the GTX 580.

The GTX 580 goes back and forth with the HD 5970 untill the HD 6990 is released but at $350 the HD 6970 is a good deal but so is the GTX 570. Most people will see this a an Nvidia win by not understanding AMD will use the HD 6990 to compete with the GTX 580 at the over $500 a card position. Can't wait to find some CF vs Sli benchmarks.

the 6990 is a dual GPU card... it cant be compared evenly with the GTX580. Now when manufacturers make a deal GPU out of say the GTX560 like they did the GTX460 then we can compare. Unless you want to compare 6990 performance versus two GTX580s in SLi.

:( I hate to see nvidia having the lead, always been a bit of an AMD/ATI fanboy.

At $550 for a GTX 580 or $600 for a HD 6990 why can't you compare the two? A $500 HD 5970 still out performs a GTX 580 at the same price point.

A GTX 580 SLI is $1000 so that wouldn't be fair to compare $1000 worth of performance versus $500 worth of performance. That's like comparing a Porche 911 Turbo S to a Ford Mustang GT.

AMD doesn't care about the set-up (single gpu/ dual gpu) I see AMD competing at PRICE POINTS like most companies do. For Example AMD 6 core $300 CPU's compete with Intels 4 core $300 core i7s and not Intels $1000 6 Core i7

    Price Points!!

Damn, was heavily anticipating something to stand out, if only by a few fps. I am a red team fan boy though so I hope it's a temporary blip. It's not like these cards are BAD and the 570 hasn't been out long which means that, although it got the jump in terms of release time, it's still fairly similar and in the same price bracket.

That's a funny thing actually - how do you think it would have been if ATI released these cards BEFORE nvidia released the 570 (even 580)? Do you think this would have changed the perspective?

Better efficiency and better performance all around, so there' not much to hate here. This is basically the 4870/4850 launch all over again.

Why not? If it's at the same price range then it's an alternative.

This. 2 x 4850's were excellent value and 2 x 6950's look to be excellent value compared to a GTX580.
