ATI Technologies is gearing up to push sales of its HDTV Wonder TV tuner card, according to sources at Taiwan graphics card makers.

The TV tuner card allows users to use their PC monitors as an HDTV.

The HDTV Wonder card targets the high-end market and will carry a unit price of US$199 in the channel. Entry-level TV turner cards from other companies are available for US$40-50, according to the sources.

Taiwan-based graphics-card maker Tul is also likely to market the ATI card, which is compatible with graphics cards supporting DirectX9.0 and fitted with 64MB or more of memory, the sources said.

Other Taiwan graphics card makers, including Chaintech Computer, Leadtek Research, Prolink Microsystems and Yuan High-Tech Development, have also recently expanded their product mix to include TV turner cards, the sources noted.

This follows the progress of the story that 4.5 million homes will be HDTV enabled by 2008. HDTV should start to emerge on Sky in 2006.
