ok here is what i am thinking about, bascially i went from my x800xt to the 7800gt becuase of the pci-e business. now i am ready to upgrade again i am looking at the two cards nvidia 7900gtx and ATI x1900xt-x both are really quick fast gfx cards and yes i am on an SLI motherboard, but since i have a 19inch monitor i am after the best image quality avalible. which is where i have heard ATI are pretty good. * to save arguments will be looking at 20inch monitor in the summer* ATI states that that the average ratio of arithmetic to texture operations in the latest games is already 5:1 , although its much less in older games. this is why ATI have increased the number of quad pixel shader cores in the x1900xtx to 12 which equates to 48pixel pipelines, while keeping the number of texture processors the same as the x1800xt. So in theory games such as fear and need for speed most wanted should take advantage as will games to follow. so with ATI thinking that games will boil down to maths power rather than fill rate isnt ATI going to be the better card than the 7900gtx in the long run?
why are you after a faster card? the 7800GT is fast enough for most needs. I would say that its like intel vs amd...intel have the speed but amd goes faster as its more efficient....both ati and nvidia cards a well fast but its just that the ati card is more efficient also maybe with the next get of "unified shaders" the process will become even more efficient.
lets not fight about why i want a faster card, there are many reasons i just dont want to list them off
Do you actually read the articles on the main page? Basically: both cards are about equal in speed, the 7900 may be a bit faster. Apart from OpenGL apps (Quake, Doom), where the x1900xtx gets killed. BUT If you like image quality, then the ATI is a far better choice. The texture filtering is better, and the whole image is just beter quality.
yes i do. but when you say it gets killed, im sure that it will be able to get an amazzing frame rate , once fps is about 60 who cares if the gtx can get 300fps then its down to image quality
i went from 7800gt to x1800xt and im very happy with the IQ that ATi provides me. i really have missed it from my old x800xt. if IQ is the clincher then you should just buy the ATI card.
Even with deep pockets I'd suggest carefully considering the merits of the X1900 over X1800 and 7900GTX over 7900GT, consider the perf and price differences. IMHO ATi's thinking behind X1900 was a little miss-laid and they're probably just accounting for their decision which in reality offers very little performance benefit. By the time it MAY be of benefit there will not only be much faster cards out but DirectX10 as well! As for which to go for, ATi or nVidia unless you use Linux (where nVidia are the clear choice) it's a REALLY close call. Both of them are so awesomely close in pretty much every area now it becomes pretty meaningless, even when you nit-pick down to the finest details. There is no bad choice, go for whatever you personally prefer ... or flip a coin!
The performance difference between the X1900XT and 7900 GT isnt that terribly massive, though the ATI wins by the skin of its teeth and has better image quality capabilities. But PieUK, youre currently using a 19" LCD, which is limited to 1280x1024 - a 20" LCD will increase that to 1600x1200 at most. There are very few games that can thoroughly tax a 7800 GT at that resolution - not without high settings on anti-aliasing and anisoptric filtering. Really, at 2x and 8x AA and AF, theres not too much quality improvement to be seen IMO; going by this, unless youre getting sub 37ish frames per second in modern games, you shouldnt be in the market for new graphics just yet; theres always something better just around the corner when its not already out. Personally, even if I had lots of money to spend, I would wait two or three graphic releases before upgrading again. There are so many other things out there to spend money on after all
