Was browsng the forum minding my own bussiness when WHAM, I was hit by an annoying and loud popup that woke up half the street and annoyed the bjesus outta me.

    'Moments worth paying for'

I understand the need for advertising, and support the sight's well placed and non-intrusive banners...but this companies pop up is a little out of order.

anyone else been attack by this?

I get the pic without adblocking. Well, when I'm not signed in, love me those wide forums.

OP, try not putting your mouse where such fiendish things live for more than a second

Hopefully this is a mistake from the ad department...

It also pretty damaging for the crucial economy of this site which will cause 1 of 2 things:

    1: Site gets shut down
2: Advertisers will try to find new, more intrusive ways of advertising. (Do a search for skimlinks and you'll see what I mean)

Yea, thanks for that. You realise the adverts for the site are specifically tailored to the audience and how bit-tech makes it's money to pay writers. If you like the content, please support them.

    Also, in a nutshell :thumb:

As I said Im perfectly happy with the banner ads, I find they're generally IT kit and quite often interesting.

But do feel that the giant popup that took over half my screen (which is 1920x1200!) and greyed out the rest and instantly started playing a very loud video before I could quickly kill it....is perhaps going a little too far?

Slightly missed the point there fella, but actually I'd happily donate a subscription fee to bittech, I feel that I get quite afew hours a week of entertainment from the forums....much cheaper than the equivilent cinema time!

I had issue with pop-under ads a while back in relation very specifically to bit, and even went so far as to create a thread about it within this very forum, but the reaction from the staff was that what I was reporting wasn't caused by bit, and that it was essentially my own fault. I don't rule out the possibility that it was something funny with my systems (yes, I was experiencing it on multiple systems), but due to the circumstances surrounding then events, and the fact that the advertisements went away within a couple days of my posting of them still leaves me with the feeling that bit played a hand in it.

What I'm trying to say is that you may very well be barking up the wrong tree in hopes to get more than a brief shoulder shrug and denial from the mods. Never know though, there might just be something more to it.

Banner ads that take precidince over the website (grey out, expand past banner space etc) you are trying to view are no better than adware. I go out of my way to not purchase from places that use ads like that. I'd amagine that a lot of bit readers agree with me, so allowing such ads is actually a negative impact on ad revenue.

That top banner? Does nothing to me unless I hover my mouse over it. Even then it gives me a countdown before it even tries to do anything.

Sites have to have funding you know.

For the mag I would presume so, not for the site though.

That's actually more to do with the compression rates used than anything devious by advertisers, I was told in detail how it all worked but I've forgotten.

bit-tech is one of very few white listed sites on my adblock plus plugin for firefox - and that's so that the site is well supported and can continue to run.

I haven't seen or been affected by the ad you're talking about, and as others have said, it does sound like a mistake on the advertising companies part.

If custom PC is like a lot of magazines then no, the subscription and retail sales will normally just cover printing/distributing costs of the magazine and profit for the retail shops, most money from magaizines is from the adverts inside.
