I met a girl at Benicassim who refused to shake hands, or touch someone unless they washed their hands with this crazy gel. She was aways ill.

I ate barely cooked meat, slept face down in the dirt near some porta cabins (When very, very drunk, might I add), generally took no care of myself. I am never ill. Ever.

Didn't know that. I always thought it was the other way around? So I'm more likely to catch the pathogen by breathing it in, rather than say, touching it and then eating food without washing my hands?

I am by no means an expert, but I think that if bacteria get transfered to your food from your hands it will likely end up in your stomach. If you breathe it in, it has a chance of getting into your lungs and more easily into the blood stream.

Whoa, let's not get crazy now :eeek:

I haven't taken any anti-biotics or any other medication btw to fight off the big bad nasty orange juice germs, and i rarely ever need to take medication. I like to fight off sickness al'natural, i only ever take something if i'm not winning after a day or two. This is great for the immune system, which means people like me rarely get sick, and saves giving money to the big bad corupt misleading corporations flogging off anti-bacterial this and that, which they say we need to take at the first sign of sickness! All those that just buy medication at the first sign of sickness just prevent thier immune system from developing, so they end up always needing to buy medication to stay well.

I think all the medications do, is treat the symptoms and not the cause. and a lot of them, give a short term cure (or the appearance of one) but cause a long term dependency.

Both colds and flu are caused by viruses (not bacteria) whose main method of transfer is by aerosol (i.e. by others around you sniffing and sneezing), the virus's main point of entry into the body is through the mucosae of the nasal passages, throat and the lungs. It is possible to contract the virus by contact (by shaking hands with somebody who has, for example, sneezed into their hands), but the actual level of infection in this way is comparatively low with regard to aerosol infections.

Gastro-intestinal bacterial infections are also comparatively rare, considering the amount of bacteria that the average person ingests in a day. This is mainly due to the hostile environment of the upper GI tract (i.e. the stomach and small intestine), which will kill many ingested bacteria before they get a chance to cause any adverse effects.

In the case of an upset caused by drinking orange juice, any bacteria in the juice are likely to be fairly acidophilic (i.e. acid-loving), since OJ is itself acidic, and so the bacteria are less likely to be killed by stomach acid.

Yeah, but they'll hate the intestines, which have a very alkaline environment (to counteract the stomach acids mixed in with the food).

Which is why the worst you get is a stomach upset, as opposed to a full-blown GI infection with diarrhoea.

I wondered how long it would be before this conversation turned to poop.

I'm as fit as a fiddle today, but if i used your restroom all those times yesterday, and before flushing called you over to inspect, you would think a little differently about bad orange juice.

And alkaline batteries is not what Flibblebot would have found!
