I plan on getting a widescreen monitor too like a Dell 30", But in any case what does the sentence below mean? Being an American, Slang from outside the USA(I think It is slang at least) is a problem. I mean that I'm not the person with a degree in english, That would be My niece Becky.

causing the electronics inside to have a bit of a mare.

(and yes, before anyone say's it, i do know this thread is four days old. bite me :p )

not quite as 'april fools'-ey as you might think. im a linux zealot (as im sure everyone is sick of hearing by now), and within X, its possible to set your own customised vertical and horizontal refresh rates. these are the 'magic numbers' that the OS reads to calculate your screen's possible resolutions. this is the EDID data, the magic plug'n'play data your monitor sends to your pc, and as i dont have a plug'n'play monitor, i had to enter them myself. if you set them out of range, how your monitor behaves can vary.

i have one monitor that will display a pretty 'out of range' message, then power itself off. the monitor im currently using (22 inches of crt goodness) will simply go bananas. a monitor sitting in my back yard (cause the bin-men refuse to take it) wont ever switch on again after i deliberately mis-set its rates to see what would happen. it worked for a little while, then went *bink* and never worked again.

if quake is calculating its refresh rates by reading your monitors horizontal and vertical refresh rates, and calculating for a standard 'square' monitor, then its quite likely those calculations will be incorrect for a widescreen monitor, with its different aspect ratio.

if this seems overly complicated, thats because i wrote it at 5:45 am during a drug induced fit of insomnia (i have broken bits and painkillers)

Apart from the monitor problems, does this patch affect the sound system in any way? On my overclocked PC with on-board sound, the sound in Quake 4 would constantly stop working and would require typing s_restart into the console. I'm pretty sure Doom 3 had the same problem.

I eventually finished Quake 4 but wasn't very happy with the overall experience due to the problem I was having with sound... so it was uninstalled immediately after completion.
