I can't really talk since i've only been into computers for a few years now (3-4). My first Computer was a Pentium2 333mhz that my dad got from work because they were throwing it out. We added a GeForce2 MX and another 2gb (yes it came with a 2gb hdd) and a 1gb hdd for a whopping 5gb total \o/. It actually ran pretty good for what i did p.s., leet computer you've got there Kna
I've still got my first computer - BBC Model B Gotta love loading Games from tape: Code: *RAMOFF Page=&E00 Chain ""
lol chain now thats old school anyone remember setting irq settings for stuff in dos, and feeling so proud that com1 was using irq4 and com2 was using irq3 and lpt1 was using irq5 but then your soundblaster came along and ****ed up the whole irq system you had perfectly set up... also, remember the nightmare of having lost 'mouse.com' the mouse tsr driver youd run (usually in your autoexec.bat) ok ok only the uber leet will remember this CUSTOM STARTUP config.sys and autoexec.bat settings i had some mean ass ones that would give me like mouse, sound, himem, AND still have like 630k free lol
I had a compaq with a huge hard drive I think it was 420MB or 433MB I can't remember that well, but it was bigger than the ones my friends used to have.
LoooL How would a FPS look like then, lol. I remember good old DOS. But mostly I remember when we first got Internet.. Must be like 7-8 Years ago.. or Longer. I remember being overwelmed by the amount of other people on IRC. Then learning the scripting in mIRC, first contact with any kind of script/code. Things have envolved quite well. Remember building my own first Computer. 1 Ghz Duron. (Before I always used the family computer) Hehe. L
Something like this: Remember, the first FPS was Wolfenstein 3D back in the early 90's. Actually, after a bit of digging, I found an OLD copy of a text adventure game called Adventure on a 720k floppy backup (the whole game is 152k). It's very similar to Cave Quest, but for DOS instead of Apple OS. My server is hosed, so I can't host it, but when I get hosting sorted out, I'll post it if you all want.
My first comp was a monochrome screened thing with some questionable amount of ram and a pair of 5.25" floppies. no hard drive, no godly 3.5" floppies (hey, back then I didn't hate them with a freakin passion) and a dot matrix printer. Booted off one of the floppies into a pre-dos type environment which was quite possibly the first address book type program (except it was print only, no saving of course) Upgraded to some old P90, don't know any more specs than that, other than it had a hard drive and at least 8-bit 640x480 color (win3.1 IIRC). Bumped that up to the ol' compaq featuring "THE 800MHz Athlon processor", 256mb ram, win98 and a dvdrom. Got a P4 1.8a Dell 256mb ram quite some time later, after that I found the joys of newegg. Quite sure my old palmpilot had more computing power and storage than my first comp (better screen too, greyscale!)
Holy crap. I still have my TI99-4a and the tape recorder to save stuff. I still have a vic 20 I still have an apple II (not C or E or D, Just straight up) My first "modded" Pc was a PCJr (half speed 8088 processor, one double sided 360k floppy (5 1/4)) that I gave a paintjob and some extra cooling (that thing ran HOT) and Overclocked it by changing out the crystals on the MOBO. I still think of it whenever I smell Microwave Popcorn (We got our first microwave the same christmas that I got Kings Quest) Then I had an XT with a 386 conversion chip (on the isa bus, had a pair of ribbon cables going to the spot the 8088 had been) Played a few ansi games on a BBS or two (empire anyone?) Ah, my wasted youth... the first PC I bought (not my folks) was a p66 with a 1GB SCSI drive (you couldn't get IDE that big yet) and the ram was $45 a meg, and I had 16 megs...($800 just in RAM)
I would still have a vic 20 if i hadnt blown it up, dont ask me how i was using it one day a nice bang emited from it and some very funny smelling smoke followed. I do still own a mastersystem and megadrive though.
im young and havent had much experience with such things as c64s but my mom did have a kpro ;~} now THAT was fun to watch, that old dot matrix printer (either that or it was a PGA) spitting stuff out on an incredibly long piece of paper all folded up in a box. but hey as for text based gemes, I remember zork, and I play www.darkmists.org /EDIT: my friends old apple, with a SCARY 1meg hdd, playing hangman, haydrop, and supermunchers!
Oh.....my.....god http://www.bbcmicrogames.com/index.html why have i never searched for a bbc emulator? Now I can play all these and more on my PC.... Codename: Droid Fortress Frak Castle Quest!!!
My first introduction to computers in general was a friend who owned a Toshiba MSX. We would wait for 30mins for a game to load, only for it to crash half the time. By the time I could afford a PC my first was a AMD 386-DX40 with 2 20Meg HDD's, a floppy drive, 8 bit sound-card and a CGA Monitor and ISA card I managed to buy second hand for £30 at the time! I originally had 4x256K simms but then upgrades to 8x256K simms. 2Meg of ram! I remember playing stunts and indy 3000 (or something like that). Also remember loading all my drivers above the 640K limit so I could play sensible soccer (once I had a VGA Monitor and a 512K Trident Video Card) Anyone remember these:- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\EMM386.SYS RAM DOS=HIGH,UMB Or this? SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3 Ahh the good old days of setting up your sound card IRQ etc in your autoexec.bat. I remember using Xtree Gold and Laplink. I remember having to reduce the window size of doom to play it. I also remember waiting ages for dodgy pr0n to download off a BBS @ 9600 or 2400 Baud. A good few minutes for a picture you couldnt even preview. Kids today have it easy I feel old
You sure that wasn't an EGA monitor? For some reason I recall that CGA cards wouldn't fit in anything but an XT mobo because of some little tab thingy.
Yeah... the good old day... my first encounter was this Amstrad thing a friend had... we would spend hours playing Jet Set Willy on it. My first own system was a 486 DX-33 with a whopping 4MB Ram and 200MB HDD... oh yeah and a 1337 1MB VLB graphics card from cirrus logic... remember those monsters !? Still have that card and it even works! The games I had on that machine... Heimdall, Sim City... Formula GP... oh yeah and F-14 Tomcat, now that was a cool game! Then ugraded to 486 DX-133 to play quake... had a monster 3D... wow Than a P200 with MMX... holy cow... 128megs of ram and a stunning 800, 520 and 200 mb HDDs... And now it's an Athlon XP 2600+ hehe... oh man... Fiddling around with config.sys and autoexec.bat was alsways a thrill - will the game finally work? The time it took me to tweak those two in order for that tank game by Novalogic to work on the DX-33... and then it finally worked and I just thought "damn I payed 30 bucks for this crap!?" Cheers Fred
