Yes, but when a CD is in, there is a metal doors that covers the slot, so you won't see it anyways.
But you can run external LEDs, as I did in this guide:
    http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=48541

All that is needed is an LED, the correct resistor, glue and wire.

Would it be possible to just leave out the front PCB after you have relocated the eject switch and the LED's. Will the drive function without it? I would think that this would make stealthing the drive a lot easier.

Well the front PCB also has a motor and a few other parts.
So no, but you wouldn't need the faceplate, audio or other jacks, and you could remove those.

hey zap I just tried the mod. Basically i relocated the eject button which worked perfectly. Next, i tried to extend the activity led to an led. The problem is, the LED lights up when the drive isn't loading, so it stays on. But when the drives does load, like when the original led turns on, my led turns off. Once the original light turns off, then my led turns back on.

This is like backwards, how do i make it normal, meaning having the led blink or turn on at the same time as the original led?

    According to:

i soldered a wire to the Activity Ledand the other wire to ground. What am i missing?

All the signals marked with a "/" such as /Activity, are negative signals.

This means you use these as your ground pin.

    +5volts---resistor---LED---/Activity

Ok. I tried doing that. So i connected the (-)from the led to the Activity LED and i connected the (+) from the LED to a resistor and to the 5v. Now the light just stays on all the time. Doesn't blink or turn off or anything, just on :sigh:

Did you remove the LED on the DVD Drive?
If not does it also light up?

Other then that, all I could say it you got the wrong pin.
You can also solder to the place on the front PCB that has the LED.

no i did not remove the original led from the drive. It does light up still. I tried connecting to the tray in solder point too and it does the same thing. I followed your picture so i dont think it's the wrong pin.

heres a diagram of what i'm doing, maybe im doing something wrong here:

Now that I've read through the guide and determined that the activity/indicator (disc in, no disc, reading) LEDs are active low (meaning its the ground that toggles, active low isn't the right word but its the easiest to say  )... I'm going to attempt to find the taps for the indicators on my DVD-305S (the SCSI slot load version) for goliath. I'll shoot pics when I do the disassembly (hopefully tommorow) and post. Zap, I suppose, could integrate them into his mod. I hope the 305S is more like the 120S on the inside than it was my ill-fated (oops I dropped it) 303S, which looked like a 106S on the inside.

    Thanks for the info

PS: next task, tap the indicators and switches on my HP SCSI 8x4x32 9200i.

Pure sickness Wizard. Do you suppose that this might work in some way with a Tray-DVD player?

I just did the LED mod on a Sony CDRW drive, and it came out nice. It's a little dark because I only had 1k resistors, not 100 ohm. Time for a trip to EPO. It was just a spare drive sitting around, and I plan on doing this on my main drive, which is also a tray. Blooooooo. :D

Where did you find those trace repair things? Rat shack? That would have made it 10x easier. :duh:

Nice stuff there ;) While reading the thread, I came up with the idea of having alternating LEDs for loaded and not-loaded, then found someone else had come up with that exact same idea. Cool stuff all the same.
