He also hassled me on MSN...

I didn't add him, or ever talk to him, and the one time I told him sternly to shove off because I didn't know him, I got a hundred lines of swearing and saudi back at me...

Looking at how this thread is going... I wonder how long it will be until someone enacts Godwin's Law.

    Oh wait - I just jinxed that, didn't I?

Heheh, it's not that bad, if you have a driver that knows what he is doing, there is no risk really, until some **** starts driving the other way into you...

I've been there many times, lived out there, and moving there next year (As I'm half Egyptian), although we will not live in the typical Egypt, we live in the outskirts of Cairo i.e. nice air/fresh/very decent living.

I quite agree here. In fact, from the start, I was wondering why he wasn't banned (or at least reprimanded) for the unreadable English. The forum rules state that you're expected to post in a readable way as best you can since there are members all over the world who have enough trouble reading proper English. While he may have been making an effort (though I honestly doubt it, given a complete lack of improvement and the apparent disregard for all advice), it was bad to a point where native speakers would have great difficulty understanding. Indeed, the only reason I never PMed the mods about it was because he was a foreigner who's most certainly typing in a second language and I didn't want to sound like a dick, though I'm sure I wasn't alone here. Of course, part of it was the whole set of grammar issues - I'm pretty sure that no languages require every sentence being ended by a dozen exclamation points and a couple smileys !!!!!!:rock: Never mind the rudeness and tantrums.

So I, for one, won't be shedding a tear. I had added him to my ignore list (an honor only one other member had earned, who shall remain nameless but I haven't seen around recently anyways) - and any time I clicked the "view post" link, it only served to reaffirm the fact that I'd made the right decision. I don't know what went on behind the scenes though I can hazard a guess having been a mod on several forums before, and all I can really say is that I think the moderators here gave him more than enough chances before he finally decided to leave of his own accord.

I'm sure that the moderators here wouldn't ban someone for crappy work on case mods - we all have to start somewhere. But continual attention whoring is a very different thing. I don't follow any of the project logs anymore so I don't know what had happened regarding his, nor had I read this most recent car thread. I'd still witnessed more than enough to have come to the same decision.

Oh good, this thread is open again! So I can comment on...
First, NO it is not normal here. It's a massive violation of the law, one of the few they actually enforce. Driver's licenses' and insurance are an absolute must. Drive here for a while and you'll see why. They have even gone so far to make westerners take the written test instead of just transcribing the license, because so many of them are bad drivers.....like me. Driving here is aggressive. Yes. It's a crazy mix of anal retentive European expats, people from the sub-continent-many who are first time drivers, and locals. Many of whom are young and rich and lack any common sense. Like CK.

But, the government has realized that we have the highest road death numbers per capita and per Km. And that is bad PR that Dubai Inc. doesn't like. Are there places in rural Egypt/Lebanon/Saudi/Jordan/Yemen where it might be ok to drive illegally? yes. Do you have to be morally flexible on the roads here? yes. But, in CK's case, his blatant disregard for other's safety is worrying.

And, BTW, while you could get a car in Egypt and drive it; you would be royally screwed should anything bad happen. Unless your uncle is the interior minister.....I would warn you not to play against the rules in a country where you don't speak the language, know the customs, or have an inkling of how corrupt it is. Especially being a westerner with the attitudes on the streets these days

He would have been a alright chap, even with the unreadable and stupid English and his moronic nature if he just listened to and applied the advice he got.
