When I first installed my SSD the windows install size was just over 10gb with hibernation removed and pagefile reduced in size. Since using the computer for a fortnight its doubled in size to around about 20gb in size, Now Some of that will be from installing office 2007 but theres no way that office is nearly 10gb in size. Any idea why this is happening? Could it be to do with windows update left over files? Everything else is installed on my spin point
Almost definitely to do with windows updates. This would include office updates etc also. Temp files may also be a factor, check the windows temp folder (Disclaimer: if you don't know what you are doing, don't fiddle with it as you "can" cause issues). Further, pre-fetching, unless turned off by the SSD driver suite, will be filling up, and shadow copy will, again if not turned off by the SSD drivers, be creating system image restore points regularly. Using something like CCleaner and optimizing your Windows config for SSD usage is something worth looking at. Regards, Subv3rse
used that before, looks like the users folder has doubled to two gigs, n theres a huge file inside the windows folder winsxs which is 6 gigs :O
It's probably either System Protection (Restore) and/or the Winsxs folder http://www.ghacks.net/2010/07/24/the-winsxs-folder-explained/ Check the Recycle Bin as well.
How big is the ssd you got? I've used 40gb or so of 75 and only really have my main programs on there.
got a 64gb M4. Yea its sitting at about 19gb atm. Bloody winsxs is 6gb :O Plently of space just dont wana put two much on it and degrade performance
Don't be fooled by the size of WinSXS, Windows uses a bunch of symlinks in there to point programs towards the correct version of the DLL that's needed. It's not as big as you think it is
If I remember this right, an SSD will do optimal with 25% free space - and the trick is to shrink your partition by 25%(assuming you partitioned 100%) then you can be sure that those 25% are not breached and you don't have to think about it really
Look for the actual size on disk figure, some things are automatically compressed and others are shortcuts like mentioned above. Also there are 2 temp folders, one within the hidden appdata/local folder, the other in the windows folder.
How does that work? I assumed that if the partition didn't cover a certain portion of the drive (using your example, 25% of the drive) that area is inaccessible to the OS, and therefore it isn't 'free space' for the drive to use in load-levelling etc etc. I would definitely partition 100% and just keep an occasional eye on whether it's filling up - My Computer shows it as a loading bar, it's not exactly taxing.
