My wife, Ann has just updated her mobile phone number in the Barclays app for Android. She then received a notification that her phone number had been changed, fine. She then received another notification that her address had been changed and included the last 3 characters of a postcode but a postcode that isn't hers. She immediately phoned Barclays and was told that yes, her phone number had been updated but her address remained the same. However they then stated that they hadn't sent the notification about the address change when clearly they had as it had the Barclay logo attached and took her to the Barclays App when she clicked on it. Ann is now worried as Barclays doesn't appear to be taking this seriously or taking it forward. Is there someone she she contact or notify about this? She was about to transfer a large sum of money to this account but has now transferred it to another Bank.
I’m no expert on such matters but, I think I would phone them again and, explain the obvious security concerns. If they are still hopeless, maybe remind them how easy it is, to move to another bank these days, thanks to the Current Account Switch Guarantee.
She's going to raise a formal complaint. After a bit of research I realised it's a breach of the UK GPDR. I've also suggested raising it with the ICO. She's stressed out already as she's just sold a house. The heat doesn’t help either.
Was this an app notification? See if she has notification history enabled, if so get a screenshot of that second notification. You can search for it in settings. I'm not saying she definitely didn't get a notification to say her address had been updated, but could have been something like she's changed number, but not address, so they sent a notification to check her address is up to date and she misread it. She's lucky to get notifications so quickly. I send a payment to someone and get a notification 6 hours later to check
Yes, she has NotiStar and has done a screenshot of both notifications and was able to reproduce tapping the spurious notification that took her to the Barclays app.
Unbelievable! Barclays have responded to Ann in a phone call rather than a written explanation and the response is complete BS. They are claiming this is a known scam where a phishing notification is piggy backed onto a genuine Barclays notification despite the fact that clicking on the incorrect notification took her directly to the Barclays app. Despite Ann knowing this is BS she is reluctant to take it further as she's stressed out at the moment having dealt with her mothers death and the recent sale of her house. I'm encouraging her to continue the complaint not only with Barclays but to raise it with the ICO but don't want to push her too much. I think this clearly shows that Barclays cannot be trusted to manage anyone's finances and this lazy fantasy response strongly indicates that.
