Basic instant messenger

    Does any one know of a messaging program for windows that is extreamly basic. kind of like the chat window in Steam. no emoticons just text chat?

    Miranda IM fits the bill. Of course, you can customize it to your heart's content.. It's perfect for that, in addition to back to basics IM.

    Might sound daft, but have you tried MSN with the mess patch? That chops a lot of the nonesense off it. Dunno if it's what you want though. :)

    Second vote for miranda, it combines the basics of almost every messenger very nicely.

    I'd go with GAIM. I don't always like it because it isn't a pretty app, but it's simple and works with everything. Wastes no time on glitter.

    Miranda sucks... too hard to configure, and you need plug-ins for the MOST basic thing.
    I'm thinking more Miranda a as gray window that does nothing, that has/does nothing other then read plug-ins.

    Oh boy you have much to learn.

    Miranda is possibly the best IM client I've ever used, you can make it look amazing, and even add some brilliant functionality with all the plugins available for it.

    However, I don't use it, because it's about as stable as a boulder balancing on the tip of a lobsters pube.
