I thought it was a bit crap and boring to be fair. The concept is cool, it's just not interesting.

Being a massive fan of the original and getting this on it's HK DVD release (first with English subs) I don't recommend it to anyone really. It's just dull :/

Yeah, its definitely a *brain*switch*off* movie - the concepts from the first flick that it tries to revive are just lost in a sea of gobbledigook, so its best to just enjoy the gory action and marvel at the fact that you simply could never comprehend a movie concept like this ever being realised outside of Japan :D
The imagery and style are second to none, but there's little or no characterisation this time round - that really hurts the film's appeal.
Reading the director's notes helped raise its appeal for me tho. Its obvious that this was a concept very close to Kinji Fukasaku's heart (considering what he has been through in his life) and its just a shame that his son didnt quite have the vision to finish it off properly. Just goes to show that if you've never been personally affected by war or terrorism, then you really have no true concept of the subject. All Kenta Fukasaku could manage was 'Battle Royale by numbers'....

Even so, it's quite saddening to realise that the whole concept of war and the involvement of innocents (particularly children) never stopped haunting Kinji, even when he was on his deathbed....
I say bravo for attempting to address the subject in such a confrontational way. Let's hope his legacy lives on....

*i love the sly digs at the yanks tho - that's obviously a point they weren't trying to disguise....*
