Ads work in 'real world' games. Real world companies, after all. But in sci-fi/fantasy/post-nuclear apocalypse games? The last thing I want to see is a big poster saying 'Buy Nike Trainers' or whatever.

Jeez... what's next? Subliminal adverts in the load screens?

True, that's kinda how i feel

This is 1 thing that REALLY pisses me off with Sky, you get 1 channel at a time, for more money then a TV licence, and yet your get even LONGER adverts

Really really annoying, 1 or the other, but not both, not have your cake and eat it

F*ck off EA, give the game for free (or just distro costs - eg £2) or F*ck off with your advertising, Doing both is RIGHT OUT ! (excuse my french ;))

BTW, did ghost recon have adverts ? i never saw any, but then i never played it that long, then again my copy wasn't quite above board - if that makes any difference, even then i probably only played it long enough to be classed as a demo

Or you should at least have the option to opt out of it (like getting spammed from websites)

Well, see the thing is, I don't really care whether a multiplayer game (ie BF2142) has ads in it or not. A single player game would be different though, because it's a more in depth experience, where any sort of interference would detract from the realism of the game. In something like BF2142, people are shouting over their mics and typing in random things. So it doesn't really matter. Ad companies would probably be better off just paying players to go around in CS:Source spraying the ads on walls, etc. :D

Unfortunately this type of thing was always going to be inevitable, Just look at the ever increasing numbers of splash/cut scenes before any game " NVIDIA: The way its meant to be played..." do you really think that's not an ad? I only hope that games don't go the way of the DVD, where you're forced (without tweaking :naughty: ) to watch trailers, copyright warnings, and studio logos before the menu.

Anyone remember one of the first games to throw adverts down your neck - while you're paying for the privilege - Crazy Taxi! "Take me to the original levis store..!" :wallbash:

In short if it is done with subtlety, in keeping with the period, and theme, then all good; but we all know that no self respecting company will want its products displayed in a subtle fashion but on the side of a future world skyscraper in neon lights with HDR for added eye-catching ability.

As if I didn't have enough reason to stay way from EA games. I was really downright pissed when there were ads in SC:CT (which update, btw, presumably wasting my bandwidth too), since they were so OUT OF PLACE. If it's reasonable given the content then I'm not especially bothered, but it so rarely is.

So I vote with my dollar. I avoid buying anything that comes full of advertising, and refuse to buy from any companies that place obtrusive ads when I have a reasonable alternative. I run popup blockers and deny most ads at the HOSTS level (cross-browser, and would prevent crapware were I on a Windows machine, which I'm not). I try to make exceptions for sites like Bit-tech (so don't start using doubleclick.net!) since they give me great content with RELAVENT ads, but you know how those things go.

For me, it's almost entirely about context. If products were cheaper from advertising, fine, but they never are. One of a dozen reasons I don't use my distinct white iBuds (avoiding being mugged is a plus, but one side being dead and both uncomfortable would be valid reasons too), try to avoid heavily-branded clothing, etc, etc.

I'm not a marketing tool, dammit, and certainly not theirs.
