Can anyone explain to me how this show is funny. My wife has been waiting for this series to come back on the air for years. It first aired in the States on MTV, now it's back on BBC America and for the life of me I can't figure out why she thinks it's funny. Any thoughts? A side note, what is think reality show with some chef that goes to failing resturants and basically swears at them like they are idiots? Hate reality TV but might give this a try.
The Young Ones episode where they are on the college trivia show is pure comedy genius. If it isn't funny to you then it isn't funny, or perhaps your brain is broken.
The Young Ones is ****ing fantastic Vivian is easily the best character tho (then SPG the almost indestructible hamster )
I see that I am outnumbered here. I guess my American brain can't grasp the humor, although my wife has added it to TiVo as a "never delete" enrty. i will watch a few more episodes and report back.
give it a shot, it grows on you... I experience culture shock on it a bit when I first saw it, they speak with some odd accent or something.
One of the other good ones is when they have that nuke in the flat and at the end they get raded by the SAS and some terrorists
Neil! Your rooms' on fire! Classic comedy. Much better than the pish people think is funny at times (Only Fools And Horses? Pah!). Check out Father Ted, coupling and A Pint Of Lager And a Packet Of Crisps if you can. Father Ted has to be one of the best comedies of all time. *n
Unfortunately, we are getting season 4 of coupling over here. Season's 1-3 are some of the best tv ever. I've only seen a few Father Ted's but they were hilarious. When we first got BBCAmerica over here, they used to show Red Dwarf at 9pm, then they moved it to 4am and then off entirely, I've been buying the season dvd's as they slowly roll out.
Blackadders another good one to watch if you ever get it in the states, good to see you enjoy red dwarf & the rest, some people just dont understand our humour
All my favvies too. I really peed my pants with laughter with the first two series of Coupling. Espesially the one were the welsh guy hit on the girl telling her he had only one leg...............
Lager and Crisps is one of the most unfunny comedies I've ever seen. It seems made for chavs. Steer clear.
Agreed. It's cack. The song they took the name of the show from is ace tho! The Young Ones is utter genius. But very very British - the characters are contemporary British stereotypes, so might not come over too well overseas 20 years after making it? Bottom is the same sort of deal, and still very good. Father Ted is one of the funniest TV shows made ever. And Red Dwarf - series 1-4/5ish were fantastic, downhill from then on. /tuppence
The problem with people not finding The Young Ones funny is that (as has been mentioned) it's 20 years old, very british and somewhat political so you have to have some link to our history/stereotypes to get all the jokes. Over 20 years we've evolved the stereotypes of Punks/Reactionaries/Hippes (and whatever Mike was) so unless you know what they're like, you might not think the things they do are funny now because there's no-one to compare them to. Also, you need to find comic violence/slapstick funny, if you don't then you just won't like most of it. Personally I think it really is comic genius and paved the way for many more similar comedy 'must haves'. "It's a Telescope.. a Telescope with a Mouse in it!!"
The Young Ones is ace i love it got most of them on video some where might have to root them out Bottom is funny as feck but british Father Ted ... FECK GIRLS DRINK GOBSHITE Red Dwarf - a c e League of Gentlemen - ELLO DAVEEEEEEE...... This is a local shop ( CANT WAIT FOR FILM) Blackadder - HIC! hehehe Dads Army - another gr8 The office - da da da da da da da da da da da da da Phoenix Nights -
WHY THE **** HAS NO ONE MENTIONED SPACED Spaced is probably one of the best british comedys ever made. While the first episode is a bit poor, the humor and constant parodys are brillaint. The notion of someone saying "You Lando" meaning lando calrision (pfft can't spell it) from the empire strikes back, because their entire world is wrapped up in scifi is just awsome. Its the way it constantly referances films, while the humor will probably age quite badly (people need to of seen fight club etc.) its just awsome. Shuan of the dead on the other hand was very disapointing.
