You know fifth gear is still airing right? It has been going as long as the relaunched Top Gear infact, which shows that there is a market for that sort of show. Not a huge market I grant you, but if people didn't watch it in large enough numbers it wouldn't still be going.

Of course the BBC show in what ever format it becomes will never get the same sort of viewer numbers as the old one, that is obvious, but there is still a market for something new. Change isn't always bad, especially in this case.

As for the possible Netflix news, interesting but even if true it won't "save" Top Gear as we once knew it. Sure it may have the same cast, but they'll never have the same sort of budget or access that the BBC did. I can't say I'm all that fussed to be honest whatever happens, I was a big fan of Top Gear, just not the recent semi entertaining rehashed stuff in the past 2 or so seasons. The recent stuff was still good, just not on the same level as it once was.

Sometimes the magic of something is just in its essence. That something is greater than the sum of its parts.

I agree with speed that it won't be the same anymore. But I would be VERY happy to be wrong. I'd love to still have a show to watch with the wife on a Sunday.

I do agree with you regarding access, especially when talking about international filming, but in pure monetary terms Netflix can do the Beeb 4:1

Yes it seems you are correct upon doing a bit of research, Top Gear looks relatively cheap to make per episode in comparison with something like House of Cards. Completely different shows of course but it just shows that Netflix not only have the cash but are willing to spend and ultimately gamble it on completely new shows.

Im not so sure about Netflix being able to outdo the Beeb in monetory terms, the BBC 's income outstrips that of Netfilx by about 50% with Netflix holding onto a very modest profit. They simply don't have a lot of cash to throw around, however with Top Gear costing circ. £10M a series its not a huge risk.

Bare in mind however that 5th Gear has been sold or moved onto no less than 3 channels; it may have been running for just as long, but is no where near as successful and it shows...

So, a new Show could be based around the Goodwood motor Circuit, if this true: Here

Chris Evans said yesterday that the company which runs Carfest for him were "doing something with the Top Gear boys at Goodwood".

Well if the rumours are True - they've replaced a grumpy old man [Clarkson], a floppy-haired one [May] and a girl [Hammond] wiiith...

BBC Top Gear just isn't going to work unless they completely change the format (again). In fact, I'd even say that BBC Top Gear just isn't going to work...period.

Assuming that "The Top Gear Boys" do something together, I'm not altogether sure it will do as well as Top Gear, because there was a lot more to that show than just the presenters (a helluva lot). It just so happens that everything together is what made it work - there was chemistry and dynamism there, and it's gone now.

I very much doubt that Guy Martin is going to be presenting TG. He's a C4 man, and into old engineering and motorbikes more than modern supercars. I'll ask him when I see him next week in the NW200 paddock!

    Philip Glenister, REALLY.

I watched for the love of cars and utterly hated Philip Glenister as host, he just came across as so fake.

If he is involved in top gear it's an absolute no go for me.

To be honest Top Gear as it was is dead, it just can't be replaced.

    This

The only reason he's done any motoring TV is based entirely off him having driven a Ford Cortina in Life on Mars and a Audi Quattro in Ashes to Ashes.

The bosses at the BBC have no interest in Top Gear, they think it's beneath them, and that's why they've shown no effort in naming anyone suitable for the job.

Sue ****ing Perkins as well wtf???

A show that earns the BBC ~ £50m a year. Yeah, I'm sure they've no interest in trying to retain some of that revenue.

They're bound to aim straight down the middle of the road. They've just lost a team of "Marmite" presenters and probably most of their following, so the beeb's only option is to pitch the reboot to as wide an audience as possible. Narrowly focussed motoring shows don't sell well - look at Fifth Gear.

"Traveller Movement" complaint over "Pikey's Peak" episode (which was thrown out by BBC Trust) has been bumped up to Ofcom.

There's going to be absolutely no evidence of them being able to prove they did it in a racist manner over the excuse they gave.

How did the Pikey's manage to watch the show anyway? And Pikey is a derogatory term for their way of life. Not a racial comment itself. Being a traveller is a lifestyle, not a race.

If/when they do relaunch the programme, I hope they don't try to copy the old format. Not that I didn't enjoy it (although the constant "mischief" and controversy was getting a bit old) but now's a perfect chance to take it in a different direction - there are plenty of genuinely funny, talented presenters with an interest in cars out there that, given the chance, could put their own spin on the show and, dare I say it, make it even better than it was.
