I was told that this was just a one off to finish the series that they had already filmed?

A presenter on what is basically a televised lads mag, without the bewbs, was dragging down the conversation to a childish level. Riiiiight. :thumb: :p

Get over it people - regardless who got the job, it was always going to get a negative reception. They are not about to let the show die without trying, and I can think of much worse choices than Chris Evans. The haters clearly think the format of the show isn't going to change and that they're parachuting Evans in as a direct JC replacement. Top Gear as you knew it is dead - accept it and move on - there's only one person to blame for that and he has admitted as much.

The BBC need someone with the presence to make it his own and, like it or not, Evans can probably do that. There are plenty of people who thought Evans wouldn't last when he took over from Wogan on R2, probably because they were expecting him to try and be Wogan mkII - he made it his own and seems to be doing OK, and he's still on the air six years later.

I'll watch it and, if it's crap, I'll stop watching it.

The thing on Jun 28 is a one-off to use up the stuff already filmed.
Evans will be presenting AND PRODUCING a whole new version of the show.
He's just been reading out the Twitter blessings he received from the outgoing presenters.

As soon as I read it would be Chris Evans I thought that he actually is more than likely one of the only people that could keep it going.

I haven't watched it religiously in years (only catch a couple a season) anyway.

Supposedly they are going over to Netflix, who seem to have oodles of cash to throw at attracting new subscribers.

Heh Evans may be ok for British audience but but will TG fans around the world like him? Countries where they dub voices it wont matter, but the Yankee ausies etc properly won't take to him

As I said above, outside the UK they'll probably look at him and think 'But that's not Captain America.... who's this ginger idiot?'

I think I'd rather watch Captain America than Captain Irritant.

Still, Evans does appear to know something about cars, and have more than a passing interest.

Top Gears success outside of the uk was because of the way the show was written and mostly the 3 of them becoming stars in there own right. All of the jokes also felt natural like they were totally unscripted and thats a difficult thing to replicate.

The Writer and 3 leads have all gone despite bbc trying to keep 2 of them. ( To netflix is the general feeling )

Chris Evans needs a killer first episode to get people watching the rest of the series. Not even sure id watch it myself. Never really cared for what they were showing just watched it to see the antics of the 3 of them.

It went from been sort of a car review show to been alot about them racing each other or fooling around or one of the many challanges the show set up over the years.

If Top Gear becomes a car show again thats great for those that want it but it wont keep the same viewing figures as it has had in the past doing that. Fifth gear is the car version of Top Gear and has been on alot of channels over the years.

BBC have basically been forced to give this a go as its a big drop in cash to just can it.

Regardless of who is doing it the positive things is 3yrs more car programming on the TV. That's only a good thing.

Lets not forget it took a couple of years to get the 'Three Men and a Stig' format going, the first series in particular was a bit rubbish...

Top gear before the pull averaged around 5million viewers. The new series will need to average close to that to get a second series.

They can put anything in its place and get 2million as was shown by the random programs that they put on that averaged about that figure. All of which do not have top gears budget.

If it does not get good viewing figures it will be likely put on bbc3 then slowly killed off. Which would be sad but that's the way TV is these days.

You don't get 3-4 years to make a show great. It's got to be there from the first episode pretty much. Or big TV bosses get nervous and start pulling the rug. Top Gear has a big budget for a bbc program of around 2-4million pound per episode at last reported figures.

Personally think they will start with some mega challenge to draw viewers in for the first episode then go to the new format for the second episode onwards.

Not sure the star in reasonably priced car will make a return.

Game of thrones is doing just dandy with 1.5 to 2 million viewers, but Top Gear needs 5 million to justify it's existence? :eyebrow:

Now, I admit, I'm partial to a spot a bullsh!tting on occasion, but please do continue - it's always a pleasure to watch a pro at work. :p

I don't see them needing the same numbers as the old version, I also don't see them getting that amount of views at least at first.

I could see the first show having quite a high viewer count as lots of people who left due to the way the old show was done will be seeing if its changed for the better and all the current fans will be seeing what the show is like in the new incarnation.

I do expect a high first viewer count and most likely its going to drop off for a while until the show gets it right and nails down the style and what not its going to use. My guess is 1-2 million viewers will make BBC bosses quite happy when the show re-launches, My guess is their hope will be to get to 5mill views weekly but that will more thank likely take a while.

Game of Thrones is a crap comparison, it's an off the peg show that doesn't cost Sky anything like as much as having to make it themselves and it gets by far Sky's biggest viewing figures, not bad for a channel that most people don't have access to.

Game of Thrones is on a paid-for channel so it's viewership is going to be lower because of that...

Raw numbers doesn't guarantee a series success mind -

Musketeers - Season 2, averaged 4ish million viewers per ep = gets renewed
Ripper Street - Season 2 averaged just shy of 5m viewers per ep = got binned

The last 2 seasons of TG [21 and what was shown of 22] averaged ~6.5m viewers and few before that ~5m, so imo anything under 3m is going to make the powers that be a little twitchy... under 2 and it'll be a disaster in the eyes of the beeb...

Did they air at differing times of the evening? iirc, they have guideline lower limits depending on the time it is aired.

I think the new TG will get quite a bit of wriggle room on viewing figures, initially. At two to three million average*, I think they'll be relieved that they haven't lost the brand.

*not counting the first episode, which will likely be quite heavily viewed - probably by the dissenting whiners who are saying "nope, never, not ever", if for no other reason than to pick it apart. i.e. the same sort of people they themselves would have berated prior to the end of the old show.
