Apart from fine whiskeys, do you drink beer for the taste, or as a social thing, or just 'coz you like the effects?

Taste/Social, depends on the setting and the beer. If i'm chilling with me boys having a quiet pint then i'll probably enjoy a pint of heavy or some old peculiar. If i'm out for the night then i'll likely drink some tastless fizzy lager since it saves having to adjust to a different drink when you change pubs

Don't drink either, just the smell of beer is horrible! For the last beer I had was a Corona, and that was nice, altho I imagine it would taste crap as that was over 2 years ago.

    Regards

Taste - then again I'm just making the move from kit brewing to All Grain, I've now got a drawer in my freezer for my hops and yeast. I've a long way to go compared to the lads at the likes of jimsbeerkit.
If you appreciate fine whiskies (scotch) or whiskeys (irish), then you should be able to enjoy well crafted beers, after all, the base ingredient, malted barley, and the first step, mashing, are the same.

Some of the stuff I've seen for home brewing would not be out of place on bit-tech. Stirplates made from old computer fans, counterflow chillers for cooling wort, temperature controllers for brewing cupboards and thats before you get to building mash tuns and sparge arms :)

Depends. If I'm in southern Europe or North America, I drink it because it's just damn refreshing to have a nice cold local beer on a hot day. If I'm just at home or chilling out with mates, I drink it because it's just something I do while I chill out, and I suppose it helps me do so. Don't generally drink it to get wasted, that's what cheap vodka exists for.

damn you :waah: Belgian beer is the ****! Leffe has got to be the nicest beer i've ever had the pleasure of drinking. Here's my thanks to the belgian nation for creating such a great drink :thumb:

But to answer the question, I drink because I like the taste. Usually when im out with mates we have a few in a pub, so i'll drink whatever's good, usually grolsch or kronenbourg or if they have the good stuff (leffe, hoegaarden etc) i'll have that. Then in a club i'll switch to vodka redbulls or shots because carrying a pint round a club just isnt gonna work.

I drink socially, but I choose my beer based on taste. I love experimenting with new alcohols and regularly try new tipples. I've tried the most expensive beers on the planet (not an idle boast, actually had some) and I'm always on the look out for new ones to try - honey, wheat, nettle, anything. Unfortunately, selection is massively limited around Ascot compared to Rural Derbyshire.

And I have to say that I prefer a Czech Lager or a British Ale.

The one beer I've always wanted to try, but never been able to lay my hands on is Gooseberry beer. Traditionally it should be drunk only from a leather mug - sounds delish.

You just need to get through the 3 inches of foam first...

As for me? Taste. Much to the Chagrin of the Girlfriend.

I don't go to pubs/clubs anymore now that I can't smoke inside. I may as well drink at home - I'm not allowed to smoke inside there, either, and it doesn't cost me £3.20 a pint for the priviledge.

I choose beer based on taste, but I only drink it socially.

I've given up wanting to get drunk, it just happens on its own accord occasionally.
