The time has come. The King is almost dead, long live the up and coming Beer Server(tm). My beloved server has to die. It is buttugly, and problems are arising. After adding yet another HDD, temps are so high I'm concerned for my hardware. The SMART feature of my HDD's are reporting temps around 50-55 degrees Celsius and my passively cooled P3-450 is ~60 degrees So, the King has to die: The original colormod of this one was made in 1997 The inside of the King: As you can see, there is no room for fans or anything. And the case is so crowded, that I don't even want to think about modding it What are my plans then? Move the MB, PSU & HDD's to a new custombuild case. Rip anything unnecesarry out of there. - No cd-writer (and therefore no Adaptec 2940 taking up a PCI-slot) - No floppy - No soundcard - No permanent DVD-drive (if I need one, I will open the case and attach it. But almost anything will get there over LAN) I want to make it out of wood, as I have (some) of the tools needed. And wood is relatively cheap. As this is going to be my first custombuild case, I don't plan on bying any special kind of wood, just something cheap. I'm going to paint it anyway Plans for the layout: - MB in one part, and PSU & HDD in another part of the case, separatet by a "wall" to make cooling most efficient. - 2x120 mm fan, one to cool each part of the case. - "Invinsible cables" - Windows - Nice colors Let the modding begin
iam wondering if all that is necessary? cant just add some blowholes, rounded cables, and sleeving. there seems more than enough room to me.
90% of modding isnt necessary - its for experience and fun Heh you werent joking! That colour is enough to blind a man
This is not only a question of necessity. I don't like the case anymore, so I want a new one anyway. If I build it myself, I can get it juuust the way I want it
I think he means that he will hide them from view as best he can - routing them behind the motherboard is one way of doing this.
Yes Close, but no cigar. I have other ideas... In my plans they are almost invinsible, but lets see if my skills are as good as my ideas
I thought I was going to see something like this when I opened this thread. http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/bubbacomp/ Looking forward to what your gonna do
wow, that beer pc is awsome... i was just over there at mini-itx.com looking at those projects...and i guess i missed that one. but that thng is great!
Sorry No, I haven't been thinking in that direction, as I want to reuse my old equipment. Nice one, though.
Update time !!! Yesterday I went to the local DIY centre to get some wood. I ended up with this nice sheet of (Danish word: Spånplade): Its about 125x150 cm. After a lot of sawing, I ended up with these nice components: And now, for the very first time... A look at the design of the Beer Server(tm): On the left I plan to install the MB and on the right I want to install the HDD's and the PSU The measurements of the case are: Widht: 54 x 37 cm Height : 22 cm So, what am I going to do next? Sanding, sanding, sanding. When everything is nice and smooth, I will begin measuring the exact location of the MB and to locate where to place openings in the back plate...
Whew, particle board. That sucker is gonna be HEAVY. What are you thinkng about for the finish? Did I hear painting? Thats gonna take alot of work to make it look right. Grab a small sample peice and play with it.... probably going to need alot of some kind of filler to make it smoot and ready to take a good coat of paint. You might consider a veneer of some kind. It's not too expensive and it can give you a realy nice looking end product.
if any water leaks, his mobo will probably be toast anyway, doesnt look like a real problem that way to me
Ok, so - I have to ask. Why is it called you BEER server??? Looks cool so far, are you going to paint/seal both the Inside and Outside of that board?
