I have tried a couple of times to start with linux, siply because I hate windows :D

The times I tried all failed, now my idea was to start an nic topic about the things you should know about linux or very good links to sites where you can learn linux (basecode etc.)

I hope you guyes like my idea and that this topic will have allot of interaction.

Well, you should start with selecting a distro... Distrowatch is a great place for that...

What Glider failed to do was point you to his own very excellent thread stickyed at the top of this forum (link). Another good set of questions are: what are you expecting from Linux? and; What limitations are you willing to put up with?

I'm just about to transistion (soft transition, dual boot with xp) to linux myself, just backing up my data first. I'm planning to go with slackware for my main pc, centOS as my server (so that I can learn redhat) and on a third box I'm going to test different distro like Kubuntu/Gentoo/slax/SuSe etc... just for kix, probably also use it as a download server. I hope this thread takes off so we can exchange war stories!!!

    WAR linux

I run a mediacentre PC using Debian, and MythTV. It's pretty good, only problems I have are with MythTV occasionally crashing (possibly due to a weak TV signal), but that's getting much better with each release. I am running it on a Pentium M 715, 1GB RAM, 150GB HDD, 2 x Avermedia DVB-T Tuners - works great. Any questions, fire away :)

The thing I want to do is putting an playstation 2 in a dvd player running linux.
So that the device looks like an ps2 but can play dvd's and stream movies from my pc.

I allready have an playstation 2 (for 4,5 pounds :D) and I now only need an old dvdplayer case...but that wouldnt be so hard.

The tricky part is the linux running etc.

This is the official sony website, you need to get the kit for it however.

I have the link for the unofficial way of doing it, I will PM it to you.

Mini ITX would be better, I still think an XBOX is the best way to do it (they cost £40 over here, add an IDE hard drive if you need more then 10GB, and "conversion" is £20~

Thats what I have mine set up as, I use Xbox Media Center (XBMC) as a dashboard and it easily streams stuff from my PC to my XBOX and lets me play DVDs on it.

If you want more details PM/MSN me.
